Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for evaluating cardiovascular treatment options for a patient. One method includes creating a three-dimensional model representing a portion of the patient's heart based on patient-specific data regarding a geometry of the patient's heart or vasculature; and for a plurality of treatment options for the patient's heart or vasculature, modifying at least one of the three-dimensional model and a reduced order model based on the three-dimensional model. The method also includes determining, for each of the plurality of treatment options, a value of a blood flow characteristic, by solving at least one of the modified three-dimensional model and the modified reduced order model; and identifying one of the plurality of treatment options that solves a function of at least one of: the determined blood flow characteristics of the patient's heart or vasculature, and one or more costs of each of the plurality of treatment options.

         29 . A system for evaluating one or more treatment options for a patient, the system comprising:
 at least one computer system configured for:
 receiving a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the patient's anatomy; 
 determining a computational model associated with the received three-dimensional model; 
 determining a blood flow characteristic solved from the determined computational model; 
 determining an objective function of the blood flow characteristic solved from the determined computational model, the objective function designed to maximize or minimize the determined blood flow characteristic; and 
 selecting a treatment option by solving the determined objective function. 
   
     
     
         30 . The system of  claim 29 , wherein the blood flow characteristic includes arterial flow, blood pressure change, fractional flow reserve loss, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         31 . The system of  claim 29 , wherein the computer system is configured for:
 determining a local blood flow characteristic and a global blood flow characteristic; and   selecting the treatment option using the determined local blood flow characteristic or the determined global blood flow characteristic.   
     
     
         34 . The system of  claim 29 , wherein the computer system is configured for:
 receiving monetary cost information, patient information, treatment information, or a combination thereof associated with each treatment option of a plurality of treatment options including the treatment option; and   selecting the treatment option out of the plurality of treatment options based, at least in part, on the monetary cost information, patient information, treatment information, or a combination thereof associated with each of the treatment options of the plurality of treatment options.   
     
     
         35 . The system of  claim 29 , wherein the computer system is configured for:
 determining the objective function based on the number of or distance between stents, grafts, bifurcations, or interventions.   
     
     
         36 . The system of  claim 29 , wherein the computer system is configured for:
 determining the treatment option that solves the objective function based on vessel size.   
     
     
         37 . The system of  claim 29 , wherein the treatment option includes a number, location, or combination of one or more stents, grafts, bifurcations, or interventions. 
     
     
         38 . The system of  claim 29 , wherein the computer system is further configured for:
 displaying the three-dimensional model as modified based on the selected treatment option.   
     
     
         39 . A computer-implemented method for evaluating one or more treatment options for a patient, the method comprising:
 receiving a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the patient's anatomy;   determining a computational model associated with the received three-dimensional model;   determining a blood flow characteristic solved from the determined computational model;   determining an objective function of the blood flow characteristic solved from the determined computational model, the objective function designed to maximize or minimize the determined blood flow characteristic; and   selecting a treatment option by solving the determined objective function.   
     
     
         40 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 39 , wherein the blood flow characteristic includes arterial flow, blood pressure change, fractional flow reserve loss, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         41 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 39 , further comprising:
 determining a local blood flow characteristic and a global blood flow characteristic; and   selecting the treatment option using the determined local blood flow characteristic or the determined global blood flow characteristic.   
     
     
         42 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 39 , further comprising:
 receiving monetary cost information, patient information, treatment information, or a combination thereof associated with each treatment option of a plurality of treatment options including the treatment option; and   selecting the treatment option out of the plurality of treatment options based, at least in part, on the monetary cost information, patient information, treatment information, or a combination thereof associated with each of the treatment options of the plurality of treatment options.   
     
     
         43 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 39 , further comprising:
 determining the objective function based on the number of or distance between stents, grafts, bifurcations, or interventions.   
     
     
         44 . The computer-implemented method of  claim 39 , further comprising:

 displaying the three-dimensional model as modified based on the selected treatment option.   
     
     
         47 . A non-transitory computer readable medium for use on a computer system containing computer-executable programming instructions for evaluating one or more treatment options for a patient, the method comprising:
 receiving a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the patient's anatomy;   determining a computational model associated with the received three-dimensional model;   determining a blood flow characteristic solved from the determined computational model;   determining an objective function of the blood flow characteristic solved from the determined computational model, the objective function designed to maximize or minimize the determined blood flow characteristic; and   selecting a treatment option by solving the determined objective function.   
     
     
         48 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 47 , wherein the blood flow characteristic includes arterial flow, blood pressure change, fractional flow reserve loss, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         49 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 47 , the method further comprising:
 determining a local blood flow characteristic and a global blood flow characteristic; and   selecting the treatment option using the determined local blood flow characteristic or the determined global blood flow characteristic.   
     
     
         50 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of  claim 47 , the method further comprising:
 receiving monetary cost information, patient information, treatment information, or a combination thereof associated with each treatment option of a plurality of treatment options including the treatment option; and   selecting the treatment option out of the plurality of treatment options based, at least in part, on the monetary cost information, patient information, treatment information, or a combination thereof associated with each of the treatment options of the plurality of treatment options.
