Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions useful for biomedical procedures. More specifically the compositions are useful in procedures involving vascular embolization. The compositions are consist of solutions of aqueous-insoluble C2-C3 linked polyethers of 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivatives in biocompatible solvents.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A biomedically useful composition comprising:
 a solution of an aqueous insoluble C2-C3 linked polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative in a biocompatible solvent.   
     
     
         2 . A composition of  claim 1  wherein the aqueous insoluble C2-C3 linked polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative comprises one or more monomeric units selected from the group consisting of a monomeric unit of the structural formula 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       a monomeric unit of the structural formula 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       and a monomeric unit of the structural formula 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 , R 7  and R 8  are moieties chosen to render the C2-C3 linked polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative insoluble in aqueous media. 
     
     
         3 . A composition of  claim 1  wherein the C2-C3 linked polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative further comprises one or more linkages chosen from the group consisting of an ester linkage, a urethane linkage, a carbonate linkage and an anhydride linkage. 
     
     
         5 . A composition of  claim 1  wherein the C2-C3 linked polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative is bioresorbable. 
     
     
         5 . A composition of  claim 1  wherein the polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative has a weight average molecular weight in the range of about 2 to 350 kDa. 
     
     
         6 . A composition of  claim 5  wherein the polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative has a weight average molecular weight in the range of about 3 to 150 kDa. 
     
     
         7 . A composition of  claim 1  wherein the polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative has a polydispersity index less than or equal to 1.5. 
     
     
         8 . A composition of  claim 7  wherein the polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative has a polydispersity index within the range of about 1.05 to 1.15. 
     
     
         9 . A composition of  claim 1  wherein the polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative comprises 2.5 to 25 weight percent of the total composition. 
     
     
         10 . A composition of  claim 1  wherein the polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative comprises 2.5 to 15 weight percent of the total composition. 
     
     
         11 . A composition according to  claim 1  wherein the biocompatible solvent is an aqueous miscible solvent. 
     
     
         12 . A composition according to  claim 11  wherein the aqueous miscible biocompatible solvent is dimethyl sulfoxide. 
     
     
         13 . A composition of  claim 1  further comprising an aqueous media insoluble contrast agent. 
     
     
         14 . A composition of claim  4  wherein the aqueous media insoluble contrast agent is selected from the group consisting of tantalum, tantalum oxide and barium sulfate. 
     
     
         15 . A composition of  claim 1  further comprising a bioactive agent. 
     
     
         16 . A composition of  claim 15 , wherein the bioactive agent is a small molecule pharmaceutical agent. 
     
     
         17 . A composition of  claim 14  wherein the bioactive agent is chemically bonded to the polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative. 
     
     
         18 . A composition of  claim 1  useful for the embolization of a blood vessel. 
     
     
         19 . A method for embolizing a blood vessel comprising:
 introduction of a sufficient amount of a composition of  claim 1  to a desired site of said blood vessel, wherein upon contact with body fluids the polyether of a 1,6:2,3-dianhydrohexopyranose derivative precipitates to form a solid mass which at least partially occludes the vessel.   
     
     
         20 . A method of  claim 19  wherein the composition of  claim 1  is introduced through an intravascular catheter.
