Abstract

A method of administration of a thiol-based chemoprotectant agent including NAC (N-acetylcysteine) and STS (sodium thiosulfate) that markedly affects biodistribution and protects against injury from diagnostic or therapeutic intra-arterial procedures. A method for treating or mitigating the side effects of cytotoxic cancer therapy for tumors located in the head or neck and brain tumors. The thiol-based chemoprotectant agent is administered intra-arterially with rapid and first pass uptake in organs and tissues other than the liver.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method for treating or mitigating the side effects of cytotoxic cancer therapy comprising administering sodium thiosulfate (STS) in conjunction with a cis-platinum compound, wherein the STS is administered about 4 hours after administration of the cis-platinum compound, and wherein the STS is at a dose from 5 g/m 2 to 40 g/m 2 .

2 . The method for treating or mitigating the side effects of cytotoxic cancer therapy of claim 1 wherein the STS is administered intravenously.

3 . The method for treating or mitigating the side effects of cytotoxic cancer therapy of claim 1 wherein the STS is administered intra-arterially.

4 . The method for treating or mitigating the side effects of cytotoxic cancer therapy of claim 3 wherein the cancer is a cancer located in the brain, head or neck.

5 . A method for treating or mitigating the side effects of cytotoxic cancer therapy comprising administering sodium thiosulfate (STS) in conjunction with a cis-platinum compound, wherein the STS is administered from about 4 hours to 8 hours after administration of the cis-platinum compound, and wherein the STS is at a dose from 5 g/m 2 to 40 g/m 2 .

6 . A method for treating or mitigating the side effects of cytotoxic cancer therapy comprising administering sodium thiosulfate (STS) in conjunction with a cis-platinum compound, wherein the STS is administered about 4 hours after administration of the cis-platinum compound, and wherein the STS is administered intravenously at a dose from 5 g/m 2 to 40 g/m 2 .

7 . The method of claim 1 wherein administration of the cis-platinum compound is directed to a region where the tumor is located and administration of the STS is directed to normal tissues.

8 . The method of claim 5 wherein administration of the cis-platinum compound is directed to a region where the tumor is located and administration of the STS is directed to normal tissues.

9 . The method of claim 6 wherein administration of the cis-platinum compound is directed to a region where the tumor is located.
