Devices and Methods for Tissue Engineering
Abstract
A resorbable tissue scaffold fabricated from bioactive glass fiber forms a rigid three-dimensional porous matrix having a bioactive composition. Porosity in the form of interconnected pore space is provided by the space between the bioactive glass fiber in the porous matrix. Strength of the bioresorbable matrix is provided by bioactive glass that fuses and bonds the bioactive glass fiber into the rigid three-dimensional matrix. The resorbable tissue scaffold supports tissue in-growth to provide osteoconductivity as a resorbable tissue scaffold, used for the repair of damaged and/or diseased bone tissue.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A spinal implant comprising:
a body having a height sized for engagement within a space between adjacent vertebrae; the body having a composition that is formed essentially of bioactive glass fibers sintered into a porous structure; and the body adapted to be inserted into the space between adjacent vertebrae wherein the body facilitates an ingrowth of tissue to promote fusion and wherein the body is resorbable.
2 . The spinal implant according to claim 1 wherein the height is greater than the space between adjacent vertebrae.
3 . The spinal implant according to claim 1 wherein the bioactive glass fibers include a crystalline phase.
4 . The spinal implant according to claim 1 wherein the bioactive glass fibers have a composition comprising mol % quantities of 6% Na 2 O; 7.9% K 2 O; 7.7% MgO; 22.1% CaO; 1.7% P 2 O 5 ; and 54.6% SiO 2 .
5 . The spinal implant according to claim 1 wherein the body has a porosity that is greater than 50% and a compressive strength that is greater than 22 MPa.
6 . The spinal implant according to claim 1 wherein the bioactive glass fibers have a plurality of compositions.
7 . The spinal implant according to claim 1 wherein the porous structure further comprises bioactive glass coating the bioactive glass fibers.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
