Access device including shape memory deployment mechanism
Abstract
A surgical access device is disclosed which includes a housing, a collar, and a plurality of deformable members. The housing defines a proximal d and a distal end and has a plurality of lumens extending therethrough. The collar is repositionable between a first position and a second position with the second position being closer to the proximal end of the housing than the first position. Each of the plurality of deformable members defines a distal portion, is coupled to the collar and is transitionable through one of the plurality of lumens. The plurality of defomiable members is in a retracted state When the collar is in the first position and a deployed state When the collar is in the second position. One or more of the plurality of deformable members may also include a barb attached to the distal portion.

21 . A surgical access device, comprising:
a housing defining a proximal portion and a distal portion, a portion of the housing including a first lumen extending therethrough; a collar being movable with respect to the housing from a first position to a second position, the collar being closer to the proximal portion of the housing in the second position than in the first position; a deformable member extending distally from the collar and being movable at least partially through the first lumen, the deformable member being movable with respect to the housing in response to movement of the collar from the first position to the second position; and a barb disposed in mechanical cooperation with a portion of the deformable member.
22 . The surgical access device according to claim 21 , wherein the barb is attached to a distal portion of the deformable member.
23 . The surgical access device according to claim 21 , wherein the barb is bio-absorbable.
24 . The surgical access device according to claim 21 , wherein the deformable member is movable toward a deployed position when the collar is moved toward the second position, and wherein a distal portion of the deformable member is curled toward an inner surface of tissue when the deformable member is in the deployed position.
25 . The surgical access device according to claim 24 , wherein the distal portion of the deformable member is configured to contact the inner surface of tissue when the deformable member is in the deployed position.
26 . The surgical access device according to claim 24 , wherein the barb is configured to become imbedded into the inner surface of tissue when the deformable member is in the deployed position.
27 . The surgical access device according to claim 24 , wherein the deformable member is in a retracted position when the collar is in the first position, and wherein the distal portion of the deformable member is linear when the deformable member is in the retracted position.
28 . The surgical access device according to claim 21 , wherein the deformable member is constructed from a shape memory material such that a distal portion of the deformable member is configured to curl toward an inner surface of tissue when the deformable member is in a deployed position.
29 . The surgical access device according to claim 21 , wherein the housing includes a second lumen extending therethrough, the second lumen is adapted for reception of a surgical instrument.
30 . The surgical access device according to claim 29 , wherein the collar defines an opening configured to allow at least one surgical instrument to pass therethrough, and wherein a diameter of the opening is greater than a diameter of the second lumen.
31 . The surgical access device according to claim 21 , wherein the housing includes at least two second lumens extending therethrough, each second lumen is adapted for reception of a surgical instrument.
32 . The surgical access device according to claim 21 , wherein the barb is releasably attached to the deformable member.
33 . The surgical access device according to claim 21 , further comprising a suture attached to the barb.
34 . The surgical access device according to claim 33 , wherein the deformable member defines a passageway therethrough for reception of the suture.
35 . A surgical access device, comprising:
a housing defining a proximal portion and a distal portion, a portion of the housing including at least two first lumens extending therethrough, a portion of the housing including a second lumen extending therethrough, the second lumen adapted for reception of a surgical instrument; a collar being movable with respect to the housing from a first position to a second position, the collar being closer to the proximal portion of the housing in the second position than in the first position, the collar defining an opening configured to allow at least one surgical instrument to pass therethrough, a diameter of the opening is greater than a diameter of the second lumen; and a deformable member extending distally from the collar and being movable at least partially through one first lumen of the at least two first lumens, the deformable member being movable with respect to the housing in response to movement of the collar from the first position to the second position.
36 . The surgical access device according to claim 35 , wherein the housing includes at least two second lumens extending therethrough, each second lumen of the at least two second lumens is adapted for reception of a surgical instrument.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
