Online Pseudonym Verification and Identity Validation
Abstract
Methods, systems, and computer program products for authenticating an online user. Authentication involves sending a code from a server to a user device equipped with a source of illumination and a camera capable of capturing video imagery of the online user. The user device receives the code, modulates the source of illumination in accordance with the code, and captures video imagery of the user while the source of illumination is being modulated according to the code. The captured video imagery of the online user is sent to the server where it is analyzed to detect evidence of changes in illumination that correspond to the code. If good correspondence is found, the user may be authenticated. Similar methods may be applied to other biometric data. Applications of the authentication include identify validation, pseudonym verification, and distinguishing human from non human access attempts.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A method of verifying an identity presented by a user, the method comprising:
receiving at a location remote from the user, an indication of an action by the user that initiates a transaction for which verification of the identity presented by the user is required; in response to receiving at a location remote from the user the indication of an action by the user, causing an application for biometric information capture of the user to be activated on a device that has been previously registered as being associated with the user, wherein the user is able to load application software on the device; receiving biometric information of the user captured and transmitted to a remote receiver by the device while the application is running on the device; analyzing the biometric information; and based on the results of analyzing the biometric information, determining whether the identity presented by the user is verified.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is a mobile device.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the analyzing step is performed by a first entity and the indication from the user is received by a second entity that is different from the first entity.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the identity presented by the user is a pseudonym.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the identity presented by the user is a personal identity of the user.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application for biometric information capture of the user is remotely activated using a push notification function of the device.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application for biometric information capture of the user is remotely activated via a wide area network.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application for biometric information capture of the user is remotely activated via a local wireless network.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of an action by the user that initiates a transaction is received by a service provider.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the transaction for which verification of the identity presented by the user is required involves a call center.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of an action by the user that initiates a transaction for which verification of the identity presented by the user is required is received via a phone call between the user and a call center.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the phone call is handled by a call center agent, further comprising:
the call center agent:
performing an initial verification of the identity presented by the user;
requesting permission from the user to verify the identity presented by the user using the device that has been previously registered as being associated with the user; and
wherein the step of causing the application for biometric identity verification of the user to be activated on the device is performed by the call center agent.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the biometric information of the user captured and transmitted by the device while the application is running on the device is received and analyzed remotely from the user.
14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:
the indication of an action by the user that initiates a transaction for which verification of the identity presented by the user is required is received by a service provider; and a remote identification agent:
performs the step of determining whether the identity presented by the user is verified; and
sends the determination of whether the identity of the user is verified to the service provider.
15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the device includes a front-facing camera, and the captured and transmitted biometric information includes imagery of the user.
16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the device receives control information for use by the application for biometric information capture of the user while the biometric information of the user is being captured.
17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the application uses the control information to cause the device to illuminate a face of the user using at least one of a display of the device and a flash illuminator of the device.
18 . The method of claim 1 further comprising requesting permission from the user before causing the application for biometric information capture to be activated.
19 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of an action by the user that initiates a transaction for which verification of the identity presented by the user is required is transmitted from the device.
20 . A method of verifying an identity presented by a user of a mobile device, the method comprising:
in response to an action by the user of the mobile device that attempts to initiate a transaction for which successful verification of the identity presented by the user of the mobile device is required, the mobile device receiving from a remote agent a request to activate on the mobile device an application for capturing biometric information of the user, wherein the remote agent is able to verify that the mobile device is registered as being associated with the user, and wherein the user is able to load application software on the device; transmitting to the remote agent biometric information of the user captured by the mobile device while the application for biometric identity verification of the user is running on the mobile device; and enabling the user to proceed with the transaction provided that analysis of the biometric information results in successful verification of the identity presented by the user.
21 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising issuing an indication to the user as to whether the identity presented by the user is verified.
22 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the action by the user of the mobile device includes placing a phone call.
23 . A computer program product comprising:
a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium with computer program instructions encoded thereon, wherein the computer program instructions, when processed by a device previously registered as being associated with a user and onto which the user is able to load application software, instruct the device to perform a method for capturing and transmitting biometric information for verifying an identity of the user, the method comprising:
in response to receiving at a location remote from the user an indication of an action by the user that initiates a transaction for which successful verification of the identity presented by the user is required, activating on the device an application for capturing biometric information of the user; and
capturing and transmitting to a location remote from the user biometric information of the user captured by the device while the application for capturing biometric information of the user is running on the device.
24 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising:
based on an analysis of the transmitted biometric information, issuing an indication to the user as to whether the identity presented by the user is verified.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
