Abstract

Stabilized biological pesticides comprising Chromobacterium species, filtrate, supernatant, extract or pesticidally active substance derived therefrom with pesticidal activity having improved shelf life due to maintenance of physical uniformity and longer insecticide activity after use due to higher resistance to degradation when exposed to sunlight are disclosed.

         18 . A stabilized biological pesticide composition comprising:
 (a) a whole cell broth, filtrate, supernatant, extract or pesticidally active substance derived from  Chromobacterium  species fermentation with pesticidal activity; and   (b) a sunlight protecting agent, wherein said sunlight protecting agent is a lignin salt and/or benzoic acid salt.   
     
     
         19 . The composition of  claim 18 , wherein said benzoic acid salt is selected from sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and combinations thereof and said lignin salt is selected from lignin sulfonate salts from the neutralized ions of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and combinations thereof. 
     
     
         20 . The composition according to  claim 18 , wherein said  Chromobacterium  species is  Chromobacterium subtsugae  (NRRL B-30655). 
     
     
         21 . The composition of  claim 18 , wherein said  Chromobacterium  species is present in the amount of at least about 5% and said sunlight protecting agent is present in the amount of at least about 5%. 
     
     
         22 . A method for stabilizing a composition against physical separation and loss of pesticidal activity due to exposure to sunlight, wherein said composition comprises an isolated  Chromobacterium  species, wherein the method comprises the step of
 providing an amount of a stabilizing agent to said composition effective to stabilize the composition against physical separation and loss of pesticidal activity due to exposure to sunlight.

         24 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the stabilizing agent is selected from a benzoic acid salt and a ligonsulfonate salt. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein said  Chromobacterium  species is present in the amount of at least about 5% and said sunlight protecting agent is present in the amount of at least about 5%. 
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein said  Chromobacterium  species is  Chromobacterium subtsugae  (NRRL B-30655).
