Biomedical Electrode
Abstract
An electrode and electrodes for a biomedical system is provided. The electrode includes a backing pad with top and bottom surfaces. A conductive element is attached to the bottom surface of the backing pad, and a conductive gel layer covers at least part of the bottom surface of the conductive element. A bonding layer is disposed at least in part between the conductive element and the conductive gel layer. The electrode can include a leadwire with a stripped end length, and at least a portion of the stripped end length is disposed between the conductive element and at least one of the bonding layer and the conductive gel layer.

28 . A biomedical electrode comprising:
a backing pad; a radiolucent conductive element coupled to the backing pad; a lead wire disposed on and in electrical communication with the radiolucent conductive element; a conductive gel layer coupled to the radiolucent conductive element, wherein the lead wire is located between the radiolucent conductive element and the conductive gel layer; and an insulator located between the conductive gel layer and the lead wire.
29 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , wherein a bottom surface of the insulator and a bottom surface of the backing pad include adhesive, and wherein a surface area of the bottom surface of the insulator is less than half of a surface area of the bottom surface of the backing pad.
30 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , comprising a hotmelt adhesive disposed on the lead wire.
31 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , comprising a label on a top surface of the backing pad, the label including instructions associated with the biomedical electrode.
32 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , comprising a tab extending from the backing pad, a surface of the tab being free of adhesive.
33 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , wherein the lead wire has a stripped end length, at least a portion of the stripped end length disposed between the radiolucent conductive element and the conductive gel layer and electrically coupled to the radiolucent conductive element.
34 . The biomedical electrode of claim 33 , wherein the stripped end length includes a plurality of stripped extensions.
35 . The biomedical electrode of claim 34 , wherein the plurality of stripped extensions are in a fanned configuration, and wherein at least one of the plurality of stripped extensions has a round cross section.
36 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , wherein the lead wire includes a conductive carbon element.
37 . The biomedical electrode of claim 36 , wherein the conductive carbon element includes at least one metal strand woven with at least one carbon strand.
38 . The biomedical electrode of claim 33 , wherein the portion of the stripped end length of the lead wire is disposed proximate to a bottom surface of the radiolucent conductive element.
39 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , wherein the biomedical electrode includes at least one of a therapy electrode, a treatment electrode, a stimulating electrode, and a monitoring electrode, and wherein the biomedical electrode is configured to adhere to a subject.
40 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , wherein the insulator includes a non-conductive layer of film disposed between the conductive gel layer and the lead wire.
41 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , wherein the radiolucent conductive element includes a protrusion including writing or symbols indicating information about one or both of the biomedical electrode and the radiolucent conductive element.
42 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , wherein the conductive gel layer includes gel disposed in a membrane.
43 . The biomedical electrode of claim 28 , comprising a tab coupled to a lower surface of the conductive gel layer and protruding from the biomedical electrode.
44 . A biomedical electrode comprising:
a backing pad; a conductive element coupled to the backing pad; a lead wire disposed on and in electrical communication with the conductive element; a conductive gel layer coupled to the conductive element, wherein the lead wire is located between the conductive element and the conductive gel layer; a bonding layer adhesively coupled to the conductive element, the lead wire and the conductive gel layer; and an insulator located between the conductive gel layer and the lead wire.
45 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , wherein the insulator is distinct from the bonding layer.
46 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , wherein a bottom surface of the insulator and a bottom surface of the backing pad include adhesive, and wherein a surface area of the bottom surface of the insulator is less than half of a surface area of the bottom surface of the backing pad.
47 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , comprising a hotmelt adhesive disposed on the lead wire.
48 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , comprising a label on a top surface of the backing pad, the label including instructions associated with the biomedical electrode.
49 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , comprising a tab extending from the backing pad, a surface of the tab being free of adhesive.

The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , wherein the lead wire has a stripped end length, at least a portion of the stripped end length disposed between the conductive element and at least one of the bonding layer and the conductive gel layer and adhesively and electrically coupled to the conductive element and adhesively coupled to the bonding layer.
51 . The biomedical electrode of claim 50 , wherein the bonding layer is disposed at least in part between the insulator and the portion of the stripped end length of the lead wire.
52 . The biomedical electrode of claim 50 , wherein the stripped end length includes a plurality of stripped extensions.
53 . The biomedical electrode of claim 52 , wherein the plurality of stripped extensions are in a fanned configuration, and wherein at least one of the plurality of stripped extensions has a round cross section.
54 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , wherein the lead wire includes a conductive carbon element.
55 . The biomedical electrode of claim 54 , wherein the conductive carbon element includes at least one metal strand woven with at least one carbon strand.
56 . The biomedical electrode of claim 50 , wherein the portion of the stripped end length of the lead wire is disposed proximate to a bottom surface of the conductive element.
57 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , wherein the biomedical electrode includes at least one of a therapy electrode, a treatment electrode, a stimulating electrode, and a monitoring electrode, and wherein the biomedical electrode is configured to adhere to a subject.
58 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , wherein the insulator includes a non-conductive layer of film disposed between the conductive gel layer and the lead wire.
59 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , wherein the conductive element includes a protrusion including writing or symbols indicating information about one or both of the biomedical electrode and the conductive element.
60 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , wherein the conductive gel layer includes gel disposed in a membrane.
61 . The biomedical electrode of claim 44 , comprising a tab coupled to a lower surface of the conductive gel layer and protruding from the biomedical electrode.
62 . A biomedical electrode comprising:
a backing pad; a radiolucent conductive element coupled to the backing pad; a lead wire disposed on and in electrical communication with the radiolucent conductive element; a conductive gel layer coupled to the radiolucent conductive element, wherein the lead wire is located between the radiolucent conductive element and the conductive gel layer; and an insulator physically separating the conductive gel layer from the lead wire.
63 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , wherein the insulator is disposed between the conductive gel layer and the lead wire.
64 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , wherein the biomedical electrode is configured to adhere to a subject and the insulator is configured to insulate the subject from current running through the lead wire.
65 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , wherein a bottom surface of the insulator and a bottom surface of the backing pad include adhesive, and wherein a surface area of the bottom surface of the insulator is less than half of a surface area of the bottom surface of the backing pad.
66 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , comprising a hotmelt adhesive disposed on the lead wire.
67 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , comprising a label on a top surface of the backing pad, the label including instructions associated with the biomedical electrode.
68 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , comprising a tab extending from the backing pad, a surface of the tab being free of adhesive.
69 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , wherein the lead wire has a stripped end length, at least a portion of the stripped end length disposed between the radiolucent conductive element and the conductive gel layer and electrically coupled to the radiolucent conductive element.
70 . The biomedical electrode of claim 69 , wherein the insulator is disposed on the conductive gel layer between a portion of the conductive gel layer and the portion of the stripped end length of the lead wire.
71 . The biomedical electrode of claim 70 , wherein the insulator overlaps the portion of the stripped end length of the lead wire by at least ⅛th of an inch.
72 . The biomedical electrode of claim 69 , wherein the stripped end length includes a plurality of stripped extensions.
73 . The biomedical electrode of claim 72 , wherein the plurality of stripped extensions are in a fanned configuration, and wherein at least one of the plurality of stripped extensions has a round cross section.
74 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , wherein the lead wire includes a conductive carbon element.
75 . The biomedical electrode of claim 74 , wherein the conductive carbon element includes at least one metal strand woven with at least one carbon strand.
76 . The biomedical electrode of claim 69 , wherein the portion of the stripped end length of the lead wire is disposed proximate to a bottom surface of the radiolucent conductive element.
77 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , wherein the biomedical electrode includes at least one of a therapy electrode, a treatment electrode, a stimulating electrode, and a monitoring electrode, and wherein the biomedical electrode is configured to adhere to a subject.
78 . The biomedical electrode of claim 62 , wherein the insulator includes a non-conductive layer of film disposed between the conductive gel layer and the lead wire.
