Abstract

A method and apparatus for machine type communication (MTC) preregistration are provided. The methods provide single or periodic preregistrations and may be machine to machine (M2M) application function (AF) or device (MTC user equipment based). The devices in the system may be divided into groups and accessed by on a group Internet Protocol (IP) address. Two wake up cycles may be provided, one for control and one for uploading information (a reporting cycle). During the control cycle, the devices may wake up and listen to the control channel for any paging messages. Depending on the paging information, individual devices or the entire group may access the system. In the reporting cycle, all the devices may wake up and access the system to connect to the M2M system to upload data.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A method for use in a wireless communication network for performing machine to machine (M2M) communications, the method comprising:
receiving a trigger to initiate a machine type communication (MTC) preregistration for one or more wireless/transmit receive units (WTRUs) in a group of WTRUs; transmitting a service request to a network to perform the MTC preregistration for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs; and receiving an acknowledgment from the network indicating the completion of MTC preregistration for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the MTC preregistration enables the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs to obtain radio resources.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the service request includes any one or more of the following: a list of cells, a list of corresponding group identities (G-ID), a registration request, a preregistration request, an IP activation request and a time window.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the service request is transmitted periodically.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the MTC preregistration uses Internet Protocol (IP) address allocation for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the MTC preregistration enables the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs to use an account-based uniform resource identifier/uniform resource location (URI)/(URL) to upload data to a M2M server.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a trigger to initiate a MTC deregistration with the network for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs, wherein the trigger includes receiving a signal from a last WTRU in the group of WTRUs

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a trigger to release an IP address and release radio resources for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs, wherein the trigger includes receiving a signal from a last WTRU in the group of WTRUs.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a trigger to initiate a reporting cycle for the one or more WTRUs in the a group of WTRUs; performing a reporting cycle.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a trigger to initiate a control cycle for one WTRU in the group of WTRUs; performing a control cycle.

11 . A machine to machine (M2M) application function (AF) comprising:
a receiver configured to receive a trigger to initiate a machine type communication (MTC) preregistration for one or more wireless/transmit receive units (WTRUs) in a group of WTRUs; a transmitter configured to transmit a service request to a network to perform the MTC preregistration for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs; and the receiver further configured to receive an acknowledgment from the network indicating the completion of MTC preregistration for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs.

12 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , wherein the MTC preregistration enables the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs to obtain radio resources.

13 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , wherein the service request includes any one or more of the following: a list of cells, a list of corresponding group identities (G-ID), a registration request, a preregistration request, an IP activation request, and a time window.

14 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , wherein the service request is transmitted periodically.

15 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , wherein the MTC preregistration uses Internet Protocol (IP) address allocation for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs.

16 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , wherein the MTC preregistration enables the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs to use an account based uniform resource identifier/uniform resource location (URI)/(URL) to upload data to a M2M server.

         17 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a trigger to initiate a MTC deregistration with the network for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs, wherein the trigger includes receiving a signal from a last WTRU in the group of WTRUs

         18 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a trigger to release an IP address and release radio resources for the one or more WTRUs in the group of WTRUs, wherein the trigger includes receiving a signal from a last WTRU in the group of WTRUs.

         19 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a trigger to initiate a reporting cycle for the one or more WTRUs in the a group of WTRUs; performing a reporting cycle.

         20 . The M2M AF of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a trigger to initiate a control cycle for one WTRU in the group of WTRUs; performing a control cycle.
