System and method performing job management
Abstract
A system provides systems and methods for visualizing a computational process. A portion of attributes of a computational process may be displayed on a face of a three-dimensional object. In response to rotation of the object by a user, a different face of the object may be displayed and a different portion of the attributes displayed thereon. Each object may represent a status of a computational cluster, specifically a set of jobs executing on the cluster. A cluster may be selected and the jobs represented by means of graphical indicators arranges on a time axis and a performance axis. The size of a graphical indicator may indicate an amount of processing time consume by the corresponding job. A color of the graphical indicator may indicate a status. A portion of the graphical indicator may be visually distinguished from a remaining portion to indicate a completion percentage of the job.

1 . A method comprising:
collecting, by a computer system, status and performance data for a plurality of jobs executing on one or more of the computer system and one or more remote computer systems; outputting to a display device operatively coupled to the computer system a graphical representation of the plurality of jobs wherein, for each job of at least a portion of the plurality of jobs are represented by a graphical symbol, each graphical symbol for the each job—
having a size indicating an amount of time the each job has one of been processing and was processed;
having a color indicating a completion status of the each job;
having a first position on a first axis indicating a first attribute for the each job;
having a second position on a second axis perpendicular to the first axis, the second position corresponding to at least one of a start time of the each job, an end time of the each job, and a current time.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first attribute is one of memory usage, input/output operations, and central processing unit (CPU) usage.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, at least one job the at least the portion of the plurality of jobs:
determining that the at least one job is completed; and placing the graphical symbol for the at least one job on the second axis at a position corresponding to an average of the start time and the end time of the at least one job.
4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, for at least one job of the at least the portion of the plurality of jobs:
determining that the at least one job is still processing; and placing the graphical symbol for the at least one job on the second axis at a position corresponding to an average of the start time of the at least one job and the current time.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, for at least one job the at least the portion of the plurality of jobs:
determining that the start time of the at least one job is outside of a display window; and placing the graphical symbol for the at least one job at a right end of the second axis.
6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, for at least one job the at least the portion of the plurality of jobs:
determining that the at least one job is completed; and determining that the end time of the at least one job is outside of a display window; and placing the graphical symbol for the at least one job at a left end of the second axis.
7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving, by the computer system, an instruction to switch from the first attribute to a second attribute; in response to receiving the instruction to switch, placing the graphical symbols of the plurality of jobs along the first axis in positions corresponding to values of the second attributes for the plurality of jobs.
8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising visually displaying on each graphical symbol for each job a completion percentage of the each job.
9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising visually displaying on each graphical symbol for each job a completion percentage of the each job by including in a first portion of the graphical symbol having a proportion corresponding to the completion percentage with a first fill attribute different from a second fill attribute of a second portion of the graphical symbol not including the first portion with a second fill attribute visually distinguishable from the first fill attribute.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second fill attributes are different shades of a same color.
11 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising for at least one job of the plurality of jobs:
determining that the at least one job has a plurality of sub-jobs; displaying on the graphical symbol for the at least one job a visual indicator of a number of the plurality of sub-jobs.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the completion status of the job includes one of a status of one of running, completed, and failed.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of jobs are jobs executed by a computing cluster of a plurality of computing clusters, the method further comprising:
displaying three-dimensional representations of the plurality of computing clusters, each three dimensional representation including displayed thereon one or more attributes and one or more attribute for a corresponding cluster of the plurality of computing clusters.
14 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving a filtering instruction from the user; identifying a subset of the plurality of jobs according to the filtering instructions; outputting to the display device graphical representations of the subset of jobs and refraining from outputting to the display device graphical representations of the plurality of jobs other than the subset.
15 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving an instruction to adjust a range of values represented by one of the first and second axes; and in response to receiving the instruction, adjusting visual representations of the one of the first and second axes and positioned of the graphical symbols.
16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:
at least one of the plurality of jobs represents a plurality of sub jobs; and the graphical symbol for the at least one job includes a number indicating a number of the plurality of jobs.
17 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising:
receiving a user selection of the graphical symbol corresponding to the at least one job; and in response to receiving user selection of the graphical symbol corresponding to the least one job, outputting to the display device a graphical representation of the plurality of sub-jobs.
18 . A method comprising:
collecting, by a computer system, status and performance data for a plurality of completed jobs executed on one or more of the computer system and one or more remote computer systems; determining for each type of a plurality of different job types among the plurality of jobs an average completion time and an average first performance parameter for jobs of the plurality of completed jobs that are of the each type; identifying a plurality of scheduled jobs having future start times, each scheduled job having a type from among the plurality of different job types; outputting to a display device operatively coupled to the computer system a graphical representation of the plurality of scheduled jobs wherein, for each scheduled job of at least a portion of the plurality of scheduled jobs are represented by a graphical symbol, each graphical symbol for the each scheduled job—
having a size indicating the average completion time for the type of the each scheduled job;
having a first position on a first axis indicating the average first performance parameter for the type of the each scheduled job;
having a second position on a second axis perpendicular to the first axis, the second position corresponding to the future start time for the each scheduled job.
19 . The method of claim 18 , further comprising:
receiving, on the computer system, a user instruction to move at least one graphical symbol; and in response to receiving the user input moving the at least one graphical symbol—
displaying the at least one graphical symbol at a different position on the display device; and
changing the future start time of the scheduled job corresponding t of the at least one graphical symbol an amount corresponding to the user instruction to move.
