         46 . A graphical user interface, comprising:
an icon receptacle disposed along a depth aspect of a user interface; a plurality of icons disposed within the icon receptacle; and a selection indicator displayed on the icon receptacle adjacent an icon from among the plurality of icons to indicate that the icon has been selected.

47 . The graphical user interface of claim 46 , wherein
the icon receptacle comprises a front surface and a depth surface, the plurality of icons being disposed on the depth surface, and the selection indicator comprises an illumination effect displayed on the front surface of the icon receptacle in front of the selected icon.

48 . The graphical user interface of claim 46 , wherein
the icon receptacle comprises a depth surface onto which the plurality of icons are disposed, and the selection indicator comprises an under-lighting effect displayed on the depth surface underneath and around the selected icon.

49 . The graphical user interface of claim 48 , wherein
the selection indicator further comprises an enlargement of the selected icon relative to adjacent icons on the depth surface, and the under-lighting effect extends over portions of the depth surface onto which adjacent icons are located.

50 . The graphical user interface of claim 48 , wherein the icon has been selected in response to detection of a user-operated cursor hovering over the icon.

51 . The graphical user interface of claim 48 , wherein the icon has been selected in response to one or more characteristics associated with the icon satisfying a user-input criterion.

         52 . A graphical user interface, comprising:
an icon receptacle disposed along a depth aspect of a user interface; a plurality of icons disposed within the icon receptacle; and a status indicator displayed on the icon receptacle adjacent an icon from among the plurality of icons to indicate a status of an application associated with the icon.

53 . The graphical user interface of claim 52 , wherein the status indicator is color coded in accordance with the application status.

54 . The graphical user interface of claim 53 , wherein the status indicator comprises
a first color when the application is being launched, a second color when the application is being executed while being selected, and a third color when the application is being executed without being selected.

55 . The graphical user interface of claim 53 further comprising
one or more desktop items relating to the application, the one or more desktop items being disposed outside of the icon receptacle,
wherein the status indicator comprises a color that also is applied the desktop items relating to the application.

56 . The graphical user interface of claim 55 , wherein the one or more desktop items comprise one or more of
an icon of a document associated with the application, an icon of a file folder that stores one or more files associated with the application, or a window in which the application is configured to run.

57 . The graphical user interface of claim 52 , wherein the status indicator comprises a transient effect during a launching of the application.

58 . The graphical user interface of claim 52 , wherein
the icon receptacle comprises a front surface and a depth surface, the plurality of icons being disposed on the depth surface, and the status indicator comprises an illumination effect displayed, when the application is being executed, on the front surface of the icon receptacle in front of the selected icon.

59 . The graphical user interface of claim 52 , wherein
the icon receptacle comprises a depth surface onto which the plurality of icons are disposed, and the status indicator comprises an under-lighting effect displayed, when the application is being executed, on the depth surface underneath and around the selected icon.

60 . The graphical user interface of claim 59 , wherein the under-lighting effect pulsates during a launching of the application.

61 . The graphical user interface of claim 52 , wherein
the status indicator comprises an illumination effect, the illumination effect has
a first intensity when the application is being executed while being selected, and
a second intensity, lower than the first intensity, when the application is being executed without being selected.

62 . A method executed by a hardware processor, the method comprising:
displaying an icon receptacle disposed along a depth aspect of a graphical user interface; displaying a plurality of icons disposed on a depth surface of the icon receptacle; and displaying an indicator on the icon receptacle adjacent an icon from among the plurality of icons to indicate either (i) that the icon has been selected or (ii) a status of an application associated with the icon.

63 . The method of claim 62 , wherein the displaying of the indicator to indicate that the icon has been selected comprises presenting an illumination effect on a front surface of the icon receptacle different from the depth surface.

64 . The method of claim 62 , wherein the displaying of the indicator to indicate that the icon has been selected comprises presenting an under-lighting effect on the depth surface underneath and around the selected icon.

         65 . The method of claim 64 , wherein
the displaying of the indicator to indicate that the icon has been selected further comprises enlarging the selected icon relative to adjacent icons on the depth surface, and the presenting of the under-lighting effect on the depth surface further comprises extending the under-lighting effect over portions of the depth surface onto which adjacent icons are located.

66 . The method of claim 62 , wherein the displaying of the indicator to indicate the status of the application associated with the icon is performed using
a first color when the application is being launched, a second color when the application is being executed while being selected, and a third color when the application is being executed without being selected.

         67 . The method of claim 66 , comprising
displaying, outside of the icon receptacle, one or more desktop items relating to the application; and applying the same color to the indicator and to the desktop items relating to the application.

68 . The method of claim 62 , wherein the displaying of the indicator to indicate the status of the application associated with the icon comprises presenting, when the application is being executed, an illumination effect on a front surface of the icon receptacle different from the depth surface.

69 . The method of claim 62 , wherein the displaying of the indicator to indicate the status of the application associated with the icon comprises presenting an illumination effect that has
a first intensity when the application is being executed while being selected, and a second intensity, lower than the first intensity, when the application is being executed without being selected.
