Abstract

A digital video editing system uses a graphical user interface which facilitates the selection of a video sequence of interest and its representation in a conveniently visualized form. Through the graphical user interface, the user may select a starting frame, a time interval, and a number of frames within the time interval which may be represented by thumbnail depictions of selected video frames. Once the video sequence is represented by a selected sequence of video frames over a selected interval, the user can then use editing techniques to manipulate the portions of the video sequence represented by the thumbnail depictions.

         30 . A handheld device capable of being used in processing of association with video data, the handheld device comprising:
 a display;   a processor;   storage capable of storing instructions to be executed by the processor, the instructions when executed by the processor being capable of resulting in performance of operations by the handheld device, the operations comprising:
 presentation, via the display, of a graphical user interface, the graphical user interface being capable of permitting user selection, at least in part, of at least one input associated, at least in part, with editing of the video data, the video data to be stored, at least in part, in the handheld device, the video data to be displayed, at least in part, via the graphical user interface, as a video thumbnail frame sequence, the at least one input being capable of including:
 a starting frame to be selected in association with the thumbnail frame sequence; 
 an ending frame to be selected in association with the thumbnail frame sequence, the starting frame and/or the ending frame being to indicate at least one frame that is to be eliminated from the thumbnail frame sequence; and 
 at least one video effect that is to be applied to at least one portion of the thumbnail frame sequence. 
 
   
     
     
         31 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the sequence is to be displayed as a video thumbnail storyboard.   
     
     
         32 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the at least one video effect comprises slow motion.   
     
     
         33 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the graphical user interface is capable of including at least one icon via which the user selection is capable of being made, at least in part.   
     
     
         34 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the at least one input is also capable of including:
 a starting time to be selected in association with the sequence; 
 an ending time to be selected in association with the sequence; and 
   the at least one frame to be eliminated from the sequence comprises a group of frames from the sequence.   
     
     
         35 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the handheld device is capable of capturing, at least in part, video input.   
     
     
         36 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the handheld device comprises an antenna that is capable of being used to receive, at least in part, video input.   
     
     
         37 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the at least one video effect comprises:
 a fade in effect; 
 a fade out effect; 
 change in light intensity; and/or 
 a zoom effect. 
   
     
     
         38 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the video thumbnail frame sequence is capable of being displayed automatically via the graphical user interface;   the editing comprises manipulation of the video data; and   software stored in the storage comprises the instructions.   
     
     
         39 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the graphical user interface is also capable of permitting a user to indicate that access to at least one certain portion of the sequence is to be restricted, at least in part.   
     
     
         40 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the handheld device is also capable of permitting a user to play and pause playing of the video data.   
     
     
         41 . The handheld device of  claim 30 , wherein:
 the video data is to be obtained, at least in part, using a video camera.   
     
     
         42 . At least one non-transitory machine-readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed by a processor of a handheld device results in the handheld device being capable of performing operations comprising:
 presenting, via a display of the handheld device, a graphical user interface, the graphical user interface being capable of permitting user selection, at least in part, of at least one input associated, at least in part, with editing of video data, the video data to be stored, at least in part, in the handheld device, the video data to be displayed, at least in part, via the graphical user interface, as a video thumbnail frame sequence, the at least one input being capable of including:
 a starting frame to be selected in association with the thumbnail frame sequence; 
 an ending frame to be selected in association with the thumbnail frame sequence, the starting frame and/or the ending frame being to indicate at least one frame that is to be eliminated from the thumbnail frame sequence; and 
 at least one video effect to be applied to at least one portion of the thumbnail frame sequence. 
   
     
     
         43 . The at least one storage medium of  claim 42 , wherein:
 the sequence is to be displayed as a video thumbnail storyboard.   
     
     
         44 . The at least one storage medium of  claim 42 , wherein:
 the at least one video effect comprises slow motion.

 the at least one video effect comprises:
