Abstract
The invention relates to a respiratory preparation providing cough relief in a human comprising: a film forming agent; a thickening agent; and the respiratory preparation provides on demand relief. Additionally, the invention relates to a method of providing cough relief in a human comprising: the steps of administering to a human a respiratory preparation comprising: a film forming agent; a thickening agent; and wherein said respiratory preparation provides on demand cough relief as needed.

1 . A method of providing on demand cough relief to a human comprising the steps of spraying with a spray bottle a respiratory preparation onto a throat wherein the respiratory preparation comprises:
a. from about 0.1% to about 0.25% of a film forming agent; b. from about 0.1% to about 0.5% of a thickening agent;
wherein the respiratory preparation does not contain a pharmaceutical active; and
wherein each spray comprises less than 0.35 mL of the respiratory preparation.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said film forming agent is selected from the group comprising polyethylene oxide, muco-adhesive compounds, muco-adhesive polymers, hydrating agents, fatty acid, surfactant, polyethylene glycol, pectin, carrageenan, whey protein, soy protein, micro-particulated whey protein, milk fat, vegetable fat, edible oil, fat, cocoa butter, tapioca starch, and combinations thereof.
3 . The method of claim 2 wherein the film forming agent is wherein the film forming agent is polyethylene oxide.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said thickening agent is selected from the group comprising pregelatinized starch, pregelatinized high amylose content starch, pregelatinized hydrolyzed starches, chemically modified starches such as pregelatinized substituted starches locust bean gum, guar gum, gellan gum, xanthan gum, gum ghatti, modified gum ghatti, tragacanth gum, carrageenan, anionic polymers derived from cellulose such as carboxymethylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, polaxamer, and mixtures thereof.
5 . The method of claim 4 wherein the thickening agent is carboxymethylcellulose.
6 . The method of claim 1 wherein the respiratory preparation further comprises from about 12% to about 15% propylene glycol.
7 . The method of claim 1 wherein the respiratory preparation further comprises a flavoring agent.
8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the respiratory preparation further comprises an artificial sweetener.
9 . The method of claim 1 wherein the respiratory preparation has a viscosity from about 220 cP to about 300 cP.
10 . The method of claim 1 wherein the respiratory preparation has a surface tension from about 45 mN/m to about 70 mN/m.
11 . The method of claim 1 wherein the respiratory preparation has a density from about 0.5 g/ml to about 2 g/ml.
12 . The method of claim 1 wherein a number of coughs is reduced by at least about 40% at hour one as compared to a no treatment control.
13 . The method of claim 1 wherein cough relief occurs within about five minutes of application to the throat.
14 . The method of claim 1 wherein the method can be repeated as often as needed.
15 . A method of providing on demand cough relief to a human comprising the steps of spraying with a spray bottle a respiratory preparation onto a throat wherein the respiratory preparation comprises:
a. a film forming agent; b. a thickening agent;
wherein the respiratory preparation does not contain a pharmaceutical active;
wherein each spray comprises less than 0.35 mL of the respiratory preparation; and
wherein a number of coughs is reduced by at least about 40% at hour one as compared to a no treatment control.
16 . The method of claim 15 wherein the film forming agent is polyethylene oxide and the thickening agent is carboxymethylcellulose.
17 . The method of claim 15 wherein the ratio of film forming agent to thickening agent is from about 5:1 to about 2:1.
18 . The method of claim 15 wherein the respiratory preparation further comprises a cooling agent comprising 2-Isopropyl-N,2,3-trimethylbutyramide.
19 . The method of claim 15 wherein two sprays of the respiratory preparation comprises about 0.35 mL of respiratory preparation.
