Abstract

In one exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, a pyrotechnic composition includes a fuel of at least one of magnesium, boron, tungsten, aluminum, and sucrose. The fuel comprises less than half of the pyrotechnic composition. The pyrotechnic composition further includes an oxidizer comprised of potassium ferrate which comprises more of the pyrotechnic composition than the fuel.

1 . A pyrotechnic composition comprising:
 a fuel comprised of at least one of magnesium, boron, tungsten, aluminum, and sucrose, the fuel comprising less than half of a weight percentage of the pyrotechnic composition; and   an oxidizer comprised of potassium ferrate and having a greater weight percentage of the pyrotechnic composition than the fuel.   
     
     
         2 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 1 , further comprising a binder. 
     
     
         3 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 2 , wherein the binder comprises polytetrafluoroethylene. 
     
     
         4 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 1 , further comprising oxygen. 
     
     
         5 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the oxidizer further includes potassium periodate. 
     
     
         6 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 5 , wherein a weight percentage of the potassium ferrate is greater than a weight percentage of the potassium periodate. 
     
     
         7 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the oxidizer comprises 45-85%, by weight, of the pyrotechnic composition. 
     
     
         8 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 1 , wherein the pyrotechnic composition is at least one of an ignition composition, a first-fire composition, a photoflash composition, an illuminant composition, an infrared flare composition, and a smoke composition. 
     
     
         9 . A pyrotechnic composition comprising:
 a fuel free of perchlorates, chlorates, oxides, peroxides, and heavy metals;   an oxidizer comprised of potassium ferrate and free of perchlorates, chlorates, oxides, peroxides, and heavy metals; and   a binder.   
     
     
         10 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 9 , wherein the fuel comprises at least one of magnesium, boron, tungsten, aluminum, and sucrose. 
     
     
         11 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 9 , wherein a weight percentage of the fuel is less than a weight percentage of the oxidizer. 
     
     
         12 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 11 , wherein the oxidizer comprises 45-85%, by weight, of the pyrotechnic composition. 
     
     
         13 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 9 , wherein the oxidizer further comprises potassium periodate. 
     
     
         14 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 13 , wherein a weight percentage of the potassium ferrate is greater than a weight percentage of the potassium periodate. 
     
     
         15 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 9 , further comprising oxygen. 
     
     
         16 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 9 , wherein the pyrotechnic composition is at least one of an ignition composition, a first-fire composition, a photoflash composition, an illuminant composition, an infrared flare composition, and a smoke composition. 
     
     
         17 . The pyrotechnic composition of  claim 9 , wherein the binder comprises polytetrafluoroethylene. 
     
     
         18 . A pyrotechnic device, comprising:
 a housing including a volume chamber; and   a pyrotechnic composition received within the volume chamber and including:
 a fuel comprised of at least one of magnesium, boron, tungsten, aluminum, and sucrose, the fuel comprising less than half of a weight percentage of the pyrotechnic composition; and 
 an oxidizer comprised of potassium ferrate and having a greater weight percentage of the pyrotechnic composition than the fuel. 
   
     
     
         19 . The pyrotechnic device of  claim 18 , further comprising a trigger mechanism operably coupled to the pyrotechnic composition. 
     
     
         20 . The pyrotechnic device of  claim 18 , wherein the pyrotechnic device is at least one of an ignition device, a first-fire device, a photoflash device, an illuminant device, an infrared flare, and a smoke device.
