Methods and materials for treating orthostatic hypotension or postural tachycardia syndrome

Abstract

This document provides methods and materials related to treating orthostatic hypotension and/or postural tachycardia syndrome. For example, methods and materials for using a composition containing 3,4-diaminopyridine, 4-aminopyridine, or both to treat patients with orthostatic hypotension, postural tachycardia syndrome, or both orthostatic hypotension and postural tachycardia syndrome are provided.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . A method for treating orthostatic hypotension or postural tachycardia syndrome, wherein said method comprises administering a composition comprising 3,4-diaminopyridine or 4-aminopyridine to a human having orthostatic hypotension or postural tachycardia syndrome under conditions wherein the severity of a symptom of said orthostatic hypotension or said postural tachycardia syndrome is reduced. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said method comprises administering said composition to a human having orthostatic hypotension. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said method comprises administering said composition to a human having postural tachycardia syndrome. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said composition comprises pyridostigmine. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said composition comprises L-threo-dihydroxyphenylserine. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said composition comprises pyridostigmine and L-threo-dihydroxyphenylserine. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said method comprises identifying said human as having said orthostatic hypotension or postural tachycardia syndrome before said administering step. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said method comprises identifying said human as having said orthostatic hypotension before said administering step, and wherein said administering step is under conditions wherein the severity of a symptom of said orthostatic hypotension is reduced. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said method comprises identifying said human as having said postural tachycardia syndrome before said administering step, and wherein said administering step is under conditions wherein the severity of a symptom of said postural tachycardia syndrome is reduced. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said method comprises monitoring said human for said reduction in the severity of said symptom after said administering step. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said composition comprises 3,4-diaminopyridine. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said composition comprises 4-aminopyridine.
