Abstract

A surgical retrieval apparatus includes an elongate tubular member having a drive rod slidably disposed therein. A support member is operably coupled to a distal end of the drive rod. A pouch is attached to the support member and has a closed end and an open end. The pouch is securely coupled to the support member.

1 . A surgical retrieval apparatus comprising:
 an elongated tubular member;   a drive member slidably disposed in elongated tubular member, the drive member including a first lumen in fluid communication with a fluid supply source operably associated with the surgical retrieval apparatus and a second lumen;   a support member coupled to the drive member, the support member movable between a proximal position and a distal position at least partially exterior to the elongated tubular member in response to axial movement of the drive member, the support member defining an internal chamber including a support channel and a fluid channel, the fluid channel being in fluid communication with the first lumen, the support member transitions from a first condition to a second condition when fluid is introduced into the fluid channel; and   a pouch extending from the support member, the pouch having a first end and a closed second end and a cavity defined therebetween, the first end transitionable between open and closed configurations when the support member transitions between the first condition and the second condition, wherein the cavity is in fluid communication with the second lumen, wherein air is evacuated from the cavity through the second lumen to compress the pouch against a tissue specimen disposed within the pouch.   
     
     
         2 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the support channel and fluid channel are disposed adjacent to and in non-fluid communication with one another such that the support channel remains unpressurized during circulation of the fluid within the fluid channel. 
     
     
         3 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 2 , wherein the fluid channel is closed ended and the support channel is open ended. 
     
     
         4 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 1 , further comprising a support band positioned within the support channel to increase the structural integrity of the support member. 
     
     
         5 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 4 , wherein the support band is substantially flexible and is configured to flex under a predetermined amount of pressure applied thereto. 
     
     
         6 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein an interior surface of the pouch is embossed. 
     
     
         7 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein an interior surface of the pouch is textured. 
     
     
         8 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 1 , further comprising a vacuum tube including a distal vacuum head operably coupled to the second lumen and extending within the cavity of the pouch. 
     
     
         9 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the support member has a substantially M-shaped configuration prior to introduction of fluid therein.

         17 . A surgical retrieval apparatus comprising:
 an elongated tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end;   a flange disposed at the distal end of the elongated tubular member, flange defining a cavity therein;   a drive member slidably disposed within the elongated tubular member and configured for axial movement within the elongated tubular member;   a support member movable between a retracted position and a distal position at least partially exterior to the flange when the drive member is moved axially, the support member hinged to a distal end of the drive member; and   a pouch attached to the support member and movable therewith, the pouch having a first end and a closed second end.   
     
     
         18 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 17 , wherein the flange includes a spatula shape. 
     
     
         19 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 17 , wherein the drive member includes at least two fingers that are pivotably coupled to the support member via at least two pivot pins. 
     
     
         20 . The surgical retrieval apparatus of  claim 17 , wherein the support member aligns with the at least two fingers when a tissue specimen is positioned within the pouch and the drive rod is moved to the retracted position.
