Fireproof thermal insulation system and method

Abstract

A multi-layer fireproof insulation roll for fireproofing and thermally insulating a tank car. The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll having a first layer with fire-retardant properties, a second layer having thermal insulating properties and a first strap. The first strap securing the first layer to the tank car. A method of fireproofing and insulating a tank car. A method of making a multi-layer fireproof insulation roll.

1 . A multi-layer fireproof insulation roll, comprising:
 a first layer having a first length, the first length being substantially equal to a circumference of a tank car, the first layer being fire-retardant, the first layer having an inner surface and an outer surface opposite the inner surface;   a second layer positioned on the first layer, the second layer having a second length, the second length being substantially equal to the first length of the first layer, the second layer being thermally insulating, the second layer having an inner surface and an outer surface opposite the inner surface, the inner surface of the first layer being bonded to the inner surface of the second layer by an adhesive; and   a first strap positioned and bonded between the inner surface of the first layer and the inner surface of the second layer by the adhesive, the first strap having a third length greater than the first length.   
     
     
         2 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the first layer includes a ceramic material. 
     
     
         3 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 2 , wherein the ceramic material includes at least one of silica, alumina and zirconia. 
     
     
         4 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the second layer includes a fiberglass. 
     
     
         5 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the second layer includes a fiber-reinforced material.

         7 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the adhesive includes an acrylic adhesive. 
     
     
         8 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 7 , wherein the adhesive covers the first layer over a length less than the first length of the first layer. 
     
     
         9 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , further comprising a second strap positioned between the first layer and the second layer, the second strap having a fourth length greater than the first length. 
     
     
         10 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 9 , further comprising a third strap positioned on the second layer. 
     
     
         11 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the multi-layer fireproof insulation roll has a first longitudinal end and a second longitudinal end and the first length of the first layer extends from the first longitudinal end to the second longitudinal end. 
     
     
         12 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 11 , wherein the multi-layer fireproof insulation roll is adapted to be rolled about an axis perpendicular to the first length of the first layer. 
     
     
         13 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the first strap includes a first longitudinal end and a second longitudinal end, the third length extends from the first longitudinal end of the first strap to the second longitudinal end of the first strap, and at least one of the first and second longitudinal ends includes a loop for securing the first layer around the tank car proximate the bottom of the tank car. 
     
     
         14 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the first length of the first layer and the second length of the second layer each range from about 31 feet to about 34 feet. 
     
     
         15 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 14 , wherein the third length of the first strap is about 40 feet. 
     
     
         16 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the first layer is undivided along the first length. 
     
     
         17 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the second layer is undivided along the second length. 
     
     
         18 . The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the first strap is undivided along the third length.

The multi-layer fireproof insulation roll of  claim 1 , wherein the first layer has a first width along the first length and the second layer has a second width along the second length, the first width being greater than the second width along the substantially equal first and second lengths.
