Abstract

Disclosed herein are nutraceutical compositions comprising or consisting essentially of one or more types of polyphenols (e.g., a green tea polyphenol) and one or more types of reactive oxygen species, and methods for their use to treat gastrointestinal conditions, inflammatory conditions, and immune conditions.

A nutraceutical composition comprising at least one polyphenol and at least one reactive oxygen species, wherein the at least one polyphenol is present at a final concentration from about 0.001% to about 0.009%, and wherein the at least one reactive oxygen species is present at a final concentration from about 0.01% to about 0.09%. 
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein when orally administered to a human subject suffering from diarrhea, the composition prevents the subject from having an unformed stool as soon as about 5 minutes to about 6.5 hours after ingestion of the nutraceutical composition. 
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein when orally administered to a human subject suffering from diarrhea, the composition prevents the subject from having an unformed stool at least 2-fold faster as compared to a subject suffering from diarrhea who ingests a composition that does not comprise a reactive oxygen species and/or at least one polyphenol, or as compared to a subject suffering from diarrhea who ingests a composition that comprises at least one polyphenol at a final concentration greater than 0.01% and a reactive oxygen species at a final concentration greater than 0.1%. 
     
     
         4 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one polyphenol is present at a final concentration from about 0.002% to about 0.008%, from about 0.003% to about 0.007%, from about 0.004% to about 0.006%, from about 0.003% to about 0.005%, or about 0.004%. 
     
     
         5 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one reactive oxygen species is present at a final concentration from about 0.02% to about 0.08%, from about 0.03% to about 0.08%, from about 0.04% to about 0.07%, about 0.05%, about 0.06%, or about 0.07%. 
     
     
         6 . The composition of  claim 2 , wherein the composition prevents the subject from having an unformed stool as soon as about 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, or 6.5 hours after ingestion of the composition. 
     
     
         7 . The composition of  claim 3 , wherein the composition prevents the subject from having an unformed stool at least 3-fold, 4-fold, 5-fold, 6-fold, 7-fold, 8-fold, 9-fold, or 10-fold faster as compared to a subject suffering from diarrhea who ingests a composition that does not comprise a reactive oxygen species and/or at least one polyphenol, or as compared to a subject suffering from diarrhea who ingests a composition that comprises at least one polyphenol at a final concentration greater than 0.01% and a reactive oxygen species at a final concentration greater than 0.1%. 
     
     
         8 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one polyphenol is from green tea extract and a pomegranate rind extract. 
     
     
         9 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one reactive oxygen species is hydrogen peroxide. 
     
     
         10 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the nutraceutical composition is an aqueous solution. 
     
     
         11 . A nutraceutical composition comprising at least one polyphenol and at least one reactive oxygen species, wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of the at least one polyphenol and the at least one reactive oxygen species to treat a subject suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, an inflammatory condition, or an immune condition. 
     
     
         12 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 11 , wherein the gastrointestinal condition is acute or chronic diarrhea, Crohn's disease, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, Helicobacter pylori (stomach infection), lactose intolerance, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, colon polyps and cancer, and unexplained abdominal pain. 
     
     
         13 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 12 , wherein the gastrointestinal condition is acute or chronic diarrhea. 
     
     
         14 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 13 , wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of the at least one polyphenol and the at least one reactive oxygen species such that a subject suffering from the diarrhea does not have an unformed stool later than two hours after ingestion of the nutraceutical composition. 
     
     
         15 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 11 , wherein the at least one reactive oxygen species is hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid, nitric oxide, peroxyl radical, peroxynitrite anion, hydroxide radical, percarbonate, perborate, sodium peroxide, peroxymonosulfate, and/or a urea-peroxide complex. 
     
     
         16 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 11 , wherein the at least one reactive oxygen species and the at least one polyphenol are present in an amount sufficient to inhibit epithelial ion transport across colonic epithelial or other cells to treat a subject suffering from the side effects of a gastrointestinal condition. 
     
     
         17 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one polyphenol is a green tea ( Camelia sinensis ) polyphenol. 
     
     
         18 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 17 , wherein the green tea polyphenol is epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, or epigallocatechin gallate, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         19 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein at least one polyphenol is a polyphenol found in black or green tea, pomegranate, acai, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, rosemary, berberine,  Berberis  sp.,  Garcinia  spp., Chinese gall nut,  Gallae chinensis, Rhus chinensis, Rhus semialata  galls, ginger, grape seed, sage, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         20 . The nutraceutical composition on of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one polyphenol is a punicalagin and/or ellagic acid. 
     
     
         21 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one polyphenol is a benzoquinone, a phenolic acid, an acetophenone, a phenylacetic acid, a hydroxycinnaminic acid, a coumarin, a phenylpropane, a chromone, a naphtoquinone, a xanthone, a stilbene, an anthroquinone, a flavonoid, an isoflavonoid, a lignan, a neolignan, a biflavonoid, a catechol melanin, a condensed tannin, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         22 . The nutraceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the nutraceutical composition is a solution, gel, powder, aerosol, or suppository.

The nutraceutical composition of  claim 11 , wherein at least one polyphenol is a polyphenol found in black or green tea, pomegranate, acai, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, rosemary, berberine,  Berberis  sp.,  Garcinia  spp., Chinese gall nut,  Gallae chinensis, Rhus chinensis, Rhus semialata  galls, ginger, grape seed, sage, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         42 . The nutraceutical composition on of  claim 11 , wherein the at least one polyphenol is a punicalagin and/or ellagic acid.
