Claims

Abstract

A composition of matter comprising an α-ketoglutarate (AKG) or an α-ketoglutaric acid or a salt of an α-ketoglutarate may be used to treat patients having a neurodegenerative disease, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The composition may be administered hourly or may be administered once a day depending on the size and activity of the patient and the release coating or mechanism provided. In addition to AKG, a core composition may comprise GABA and a source of coenzyme Q10. Other substances may be provided either orally or intravenous in addition to the core composition, as required to control symptoms, or in order to stimulate stem cells to add motor neurons.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A composition for treatment of neurodegenerative disease comprising a therapeutically effective amount of an α-ketoglutarate (alpha-ketoglutarate) and a therapeutically effective amount of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). 
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1  further comprising a therapeutically effective amount of ubiquinol or a form of coenzyme Q10. 
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 2  further comprising a nicotinamide. 
     
     
         4 . The composition of  claim 3 , wherein the nicotinamide comprises NADH. 
     
     
         5 . The composition of  claim 3 , wherein the nicotinamide comprises niacin. 
     
     
         6 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the α-ketoglutarate comprises an arginine-α-ketoglutarate. 
     
     
         7 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the α-ketoglutarate comprises a glycine-α-ketoglutarate. 
     
     
         8 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the α-ketoglutarate comprises a magnesium-α-ketoglutarate. 
     
     
         9 . The composition of  claim 3 , further comprising a caprylic acid. 
     
     
         10 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the α-ketoglutarate is present in an amount of 1 gram to 6 grams per serving. 
     
     
         11 . The composition of  claim 10 , wherein each serving is packaged in single serving packages. 
     
     
         12 . A method of administering a composition for treating neurodegenerative diseases, comprising: combining a source of α-ketoglutarate (AKG) in a therapeutically effective amount with a source of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in a therapeutically effective amount as constituents in a powder or liquid serving. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the α-ketoglutarate (AKG) comprises 1 to 6 grams of α-ketoglutarate (AKG). 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the α-ketoglutarate (AKG) comprises 1 to 3 grams of α-ketoglutarate (AKG). 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 12 , further comprising adding a therapeutically effect amount of ubiquinol or a form of coenzyme Q10. 
     
     
         16 . A therapeutic system for treating a motor neuron disease comprising: administering a source of α-ketoglutarate (AKG) in a therapeutically effective amount and a source of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in a therapeutically effective amount in combination with a stem cell therapy for increasing the number motor neurons in a patient. 
     
     
         17 . The therapeutic system of  claim 16 , further comprising administering a therapeutically effect amount of ubiquinol or a form of coenzyme Q10.
