Abstract

The present invention is a method and device for the correction and reduction of bone deformities, such as metatarsus primus adductus, using a plate body with winged buttresses and dorsal loop. The method and device can be affixed to a bone without any drilling or violating of the bone and can use a tethering technique which does not require drilling into the second metatarsal, nor does it require the placement of a prominent suture knot/button device medially along the first metatarsal.

         11 . A method of bone stabilization between an unstable metatarsal bone and a stable metatarsal bone, the method comprising:
 providing a device comprising:
 an elongate body comprising a first end, a second end, and a longitudinal axis extending between the first end and the second end;
 at least one pair of buttress wings, each wing extending outwardly away from an opposite side of the elongate body such that a longitudinal axis of the pair of buttress wings is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongate body; and
 a channel defining a path transverse to the longitudinal axis of the elongate body;
   disposing the elongate body such that an inner surface of the elongate body abuts a surface of the stable metatarsal bone and the longitudinal axis of the elongate body is aligned with a longitudinal axis of the stable metatarsal bone; coupling cerclage material passing through the channel to the unstable metatarsal bone of the foot; and tightening the cerclage material to decrease an angular bone deformity between the unstable and stable metatarsal bones, wherein after tightening, the cerclage material extends over an outer surface of the at least one pair of buttress wings.

         12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising securing the cerclage material to the unstable metatarsal bone using an interference screw.

         13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising inserting a screw through a hole in the elongate body and into the dorsal cortex of the stable metatarsal bone.

         14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein disposing the elongate body such that the inner surface abuts a surface of the stable metatarsal bone comprises disposing the elongate body such that one of the at least one pair of buttress wings abuts a dorsal surface of the stable metatarsal bone and the other of the at least one pair of buttress wings abuts a plantar surface of the stable metatarsal bone.

         15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the path is directly aligned with the longitudinal axis of the pair of buttress wings.

         16 . A method of bone stabilization between an unstable bone and a stable bone, the method comprising:
 providing a bone stabilization device comprising:
 an elongate body with an outer surface and an inner surface;
 at least two buttress wings extending from opposite sides of the elongate body and perpendicularly from a longitudinal axis of the elongate body; and
 at least one channel along the outer surface of the elongate body;
   disposing the bone stabilization device such that the inner surface of the elongate body abuts the stable bone and the longitudinal axis of the elongate body is aligned with a longitudinal axis of the stable bone; coupling cerclage material passing through the channel to the unstable bone; and tightening the cerclage material, such that the cerclage material extends over an outer surface of the buttress wings.

         17 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising passing a free end of the cerclage material into a hole drilled into the unstable bone, and inserting an interference screw into the drilled hole to secure the cerclage material.

         18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein tightening the cerclage material reduces an angle between the stable and unstable bones.

         19 . The method of claim 16 , wherein disposing the bone stabilization device such that the inner surface of the elongate body abuts the stable bone comprises disposing the bone stabilization device such that the buttress wings abut the stable bone.

         20 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the channel extends transverse to the longitudinal axis of the elongate body and wherein when the cerclage material is passed through the channel, the cerclage material is maintained in alignment over the outer surface of the buttress wings.

         21 . A method of bone stabilization between an unstable metatarsal bone and a stable metatarsal bone, comprising:
 disposing a bone stabilization device against a lateral cortex of the stable metatarsal, wherein cerclage material is threaded through a channel of the bone stabilization device; tying the cerclage material around the stable metatarsal and the bone stabilization device in a cerclage fashion such that the cerclage material extends perpendicularly to a longitudinal axis of the bone stabilization device; drilling a hole through the unstable metatarsal; creating a tunnel through soft tissue between the unstable metatarsal and the stable metatarsal; passing free ends of the cerclage material through the tunnel and pulling the free ends of the cerclage material through the hole in the unstable metatarsal; applying tension to the cerclage material while reducing angular deformity between the unstable and stable metatarsals; and inserting an anchor medially in the hole of the unstable metatarsal, thereby fixing the cerclage material to the unstable metatarsal under tension

         22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the bone stabilization device comprises an elongate body having a longitudinal axis and two buttress wings, each buttress wing extending from an opposite side of the elongate body such that a longitudinal axis of the buttress wings is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongate body.

         23 . The method of claim 21 , wherein tying the cerclage material around the stable metatarsal and the bone stabilization device comprises tying the cerclage material such that the cerclage material extends across the buttress wings.
