Claims

Abstract

A surgical access device is disclosed herein. The surgical access device includes a housing adapted for insertion into an incision in tissue and at least one inflatable portion disposed on the housing. The housing defines a proximal end and a distal end and has a lumen extending therethrough for the reception of a surgical access portal. The at least one inflatable portion has a deflated state and an inflated state and the housing is insertable into the incision in tissue when the at least one inflatable portion is in the deflated state. The housing is adapted to form a substantially fluid tight seal with the incision in tissue and with a surgical access portal inserted therethrough when the at least one inflatable portion is in the inflated state.

         21 . A surgical access device, comprising:
 a housing adapted for insertion into an incision in tissue, the housing defining a proximal end and a distal end and defining a lumen extending therethrough for reception of a surgical access portal; and   at least one inflatable portion disposed on the housing and including a central portion extending towards a center of the housing, the at least one inflatable portion having a deflated state and an inflated state, the housing adapted to form a substantially fluid tight seal with the incision in tissue and with a surgical access portal inserted therethrough when the at least one inflatable portion is in the inflated state.   
     
     
         22 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one inflatable portion further includes a partially inflated state. 
     
     
         23 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one inflatable portion extends along a circumference of an interior surface of the housing. 
     
     
         24 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the housing is insertable into an incision in tissue with the at least one inflatable portion in one of the deflated state, a partially inflated state, or the inflated state. 
     
     
         25 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the housing is a wound protector that may be selectively shortened by a user rolling a portion thereof. 
     
     
         26 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one inflatable portion further includes a tube extending proximally therefrom, the tube adapted to provide fluid to the at least one inflatable portion from a fluid source connected thereto. 
     
     
         27 . The surgical access device of  claim 26 , wherein the tube is disposed within the housing. 
     
     
         28 . The surgical access device of  claim 26 , wherein the tube is disposed on the housing. 
     
     
         29 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the housing further includes a crescent shaped ring disposed at the proximal end, at least a portion of the housing being wrapped around the ring, the ring being rotatable to increase or decrease the length of the housing. 
     
     
         30 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one inflatable portion extends along a portion of a length of the lumen. 
     
     
         31 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the central portion of the at least one inflatable portion is configured to abut the surgical access portal in the inflated state. 
     
     
         32 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the central portion of the at least one inflatable portion further defines a semi-circular cross-section. 
     
     
         33 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the central portion of the at least one inflatable portion reduces a diameter of the lumen in the inflated state. 
     
     
         34 . The surgical access device of  claim 21 , wherein the central portion of the at least one inflatable portion is proximate to an interior surface of the housing in the deflated state. 
     
     
         35 . A method of providing surgical access through tissue comprising:
 inserting a distal end of a housing into an incision in tissue such that the housing extends therethrough;   inserting a surgical access portal into a lumen of the housing, the lumen defined between the distal end and a proximal end of the housing; and   inflating an inflatable portion disposed on the housing such that a central portion of the inflatable portion extends away from an interior surface of the housing and abuts the surgical access portal such that a fluid tight seal is formed therewith.   
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 35 , wherein inflating the inflatable portion further includes exerting a force radially outward upon an outer surface of the housing such that a substantially fluid tight seal is formed between the outer surface of the housing and the incision. 
     
     
         37 . The method of  claim 35 , further comprising:
 coupling a fluid source to a tube extending from the housing, the tube in fluid communication with the inflatable portion; and   dispensing fluid to the inflatable portion from the fluid source.   
     
     
         38 . The method of  claim 35 , wherein inflating the inflatable portion further includes reducing a diameter of the lumen of the housing as the central portion of the inflatable portion extends away from the interior surface of the housing. 
     
     
         39 . The method of  claim 35 , wherein inserting the distal end of the housing into an incision further includes approximating the central portion of the inflatable portion with the interior surface of the housing.
