Abstract

Surgically implantable drug delivery systems for long-term delivery of haloperidol containing a biodegradable polymer and haloperidol fabricated into the surgically implantable drug delivery systems via solvent casting and compression molding are provided. Also provided are methods for producing the surgically implantable drug delivery systems and methods for using these systems in the treatment of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.

         11 . A method for treating a psychotic disease or condition in a subject, the method comprising: administering to said subject a controlled release composition capable of forming an implant, said composition comprising: a mixture of at least one biodegradable polymer or copolymer and an effective amount of an anti-psychotic drug, wherein said at least one biodegradable polymer or copolymer comprises polylactide, and wherein said drug is mixed with said at least one biodegradable polymer or copolymer in said composition, such that the drug is delivered gradually rather than with an initial burst and is delivered for an extended duration of a desired delivery period, thereby treating said psychotic disease or condition in said subject. 
     
     
         12 . The method of claim  23 , wherein said drug is present in an amount of about 40%. 
     
     
         13 . The method claim  23 , wherein said drug is present in an amount of about 30%. 
     
     
         14 . The method claim  23 , wherein said drug is present in an amount of about 20%. 
     
     
         15 . The method claim  23 , wherein said drug is present in an amount of more than about 10%.

         17 . The method of claim  23 , wherein said composition is removable from said patient in the event said patient exhibits unwanted side effects following implantation. 
     
     
         18 . The method of claim  23 , wherein said composition is administered under the skin of a patient between the muscle and the dermis. 
     
     
         19 . The method of claim  23 , wherein said disease is schizophrenia. 
     
     
         20 . A method for providing a long term release of a drug to treat a psychotic disease or condition in a subject, the method comprising: administering to said subject a controlled release composition capable of forming an implant, said composition comprising: a mixture of at least one biodegradable polymer or copolymer and an effective amount of an anti-psychotic drug, wherein said at least one biodegradable polymer or copolymer comprises polylactide, and wherein said drug is mixed with said at least one biodegradable polymer or copolymer in said composition, such that the drug is delivered gradually rather than with an initial burst and is delivered for an extended duration of a desired delivery period, thereby providing a long term release of said drug to treat said psychotic disease or condition in said subject.
