Abstract

A method for controlling a bidirectional remote controller is provided. The method includes receiving, at the bidirectional remote controller, menu information from a display apparatus; generating, at the bidirectional remote controller, a menu screen based on the received menu information for controlling the display apparatus; and displaying the generated menu screen on a display of the bidirectional remote controller.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A remote controller comprising:
a communication unit configured to receive information for generating a menu screen from a display apparatus for controlling the display apparatus; a display unit; and a control unit configured: to generate the menu screen including a plurality of menu items based on the received information, each of the plurality of menu items respectively corresponding to each of a plurality of screens which are displayable on the display apparatus, and to control the display unit to display the menu screen including a plurality of menu items, in response to a user input for selecting a menu item among the plurality of menu items in the menu screen, to transmit a control signal including identification information corresponding to the selected menu item to the display apparatus so that the display apparatus activates a screen among the plurality of screens corresponding to the identification information immediately.

2 . The remote controller as claimed in claim 1 , in response to a user input for a character input following the user input for selecting the menu item, the control unit transmits information corresponding to the character input to the display apparatus on which the screen corresponding to the identification information is activated.

3 . The remote controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein user input on the menu screen does not affect a display status of the display apparatus until the control signal is transmitted.

4 . The remote controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the display apparatus displays the screen immediately, in response to receiving the control signal.

5 . The remote controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the menu screen comprises at least one of an on-screen display (OSD) menu screen and an e-manual screen of the display apparatus.

6 . The remote controller as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the OSD menu screen is a screen for setting a screen or sound of the display apparatus.

7 . The remote controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the menu information is encoded in an Extensible Markup Language (XML) data format.

8 . The remote controller as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the control signal is for storing data input by the remote controller in the display apparatus.

         9 . A display apparatus comprising:
a display; a storage configured to store a plurality of screens, each having a corresponding identification information; a communicator configured to communicate with an external device; a controller configured: to control the communicator to transmit information on the plurality of the screens having the corresponding identification information to the external device for the external device to display a menu screen including the plurality of menu items based on the information, each of the plurality of menu items corresponding to each of the plurality of screens, respectively, to receive a control signal including identification information corresponding to a menu item selected from among the plurality of menu items included in the menu screen displayed on the external device, to activate a screen corresponding to the identification information immediately.

10 . The display apparatus as claimed in 9 , in response to a character input following the control signal, the control unit processes the character input while the screen is activated.

11 . The display apparatus as claimed in 9 , wherein the controller controls the display to display the screen immediately, in response to receiving the identification information.

12 . The display apparatus as claimed in 9 , wherein user input on the external device does not affect the display of the display apparatus until the control signal is received.

13 . The display apparatus as claimed in 9 , wherein the controller controls the display apparatus based on a user input received through menu screen displayed on a touch display of the external device, and performs a function corresponding to the received control signal, the menu screen being generated
based on the information on the plurality of the menu items.
