Abstract

Methods and apparatuses are provided for navigating an electronic document. In one implementation, a method includes executing a command associated with a region selected by a tap gesture. In another implementation, a method includes displaying a slider on a slide bar including an expanded part corresponding to a section of the electronic document. The expanded part is disproportionately larger than other parts of the slide bar corresponding to other sections of the electronic document. Methods and apparatuses are provided for activating an element of an electronic document. In one implementation, a method includes activating the element selected by a touch gesture. Methods and apparatuses are provided for controlling a perceived brightness of an electronic document. In one implementation, a method includes displaying a partially opaque graphical object in front of the electronic document. The perceived brightness of the electronic document being based on an opacity of the graphical object.

Claims

1 - 13 . (canceled)

         14 . A method comprising:
displaying at least one element of an electronic document using a touch screen; determining a touch-and-hold gesture associated with a location of the touch screen; displaying a graphical representation indicating selection of the element; determining, subsequent to the displaying the graphical representation, a release of the touch-and-hold gesture from the element; and activating, by a processor, functionality associated with the element based on the release of the touch-and-hold gesture.

         15 . The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein:
the element is an image; and the activating comprises displaying an enlarged view of the image on the touch screen.

         16 . The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein:
the element is a link to a section of the electronic document; and the activating comprises displaying the linked section of the electronic document on the touch screen.

         17 . The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein:
the element is a hyperlink to a web page; and the activating comprises displaying the web page on the touch screen.

         18 . The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein:
the element is a word; and the activating comprises displaying a definition button for providing a definition of the word.

         19 . The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein:
the element is a group of words; and the activating comprises displaying a simple view on the touch screen, the simple view enabling a selection of a word from the group of words.

         20 . The computer-implemented method of claim 19 , further comprising:
displaying a definition button in the simple view, the definition button providing a definition of the selected word.

21 . The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein the activating comprises:
displaying a simple view of the element on the touch screen.

22 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein the simple view enables pan and zoom the element.

         23 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein
the element includes one or more subelements; and the simple view enables selection one of the subelements.

24 . The computer-implemented method of claim 23 , wherein the simple view includes one or more buttons related to the selected subelement.

         25 . The computer-implemented method of claim 24 , wherein:
the element is a group of words; the selected subelement is a word; and the one or more buttons include a definition button for providing a definition of the selected word.

         26 . An apparatus comprising:
a touch screen for displaying an element of an electronic document; a storage component comprising:
a detection module for determining a touch-and-hold gesture at a location associated with the touch screen, the element being displayed at the location of the touch-and-hold gesture, and for determining a release of the touch-and-hold gesture from the element; and
a highlighting module for displaying a graphical representation indicating selection of the element on the touch screen based on the tough-and-hold gesture; and
an activation module for activating, based on the release of the touch-and-hold gesture, the element.

27 . The apparatus of claim 26 , wherein the activating the element includes at least one of:
displaying an enlarged view of an image on the touch screen; displaying a linked section of the electronic document on the touch screen; displaying a web page on the touch screen; displaying a definition or definition button for providing the definition of a word on the touch screen; or displaying a zoomed view of the element on the touch screen to allow selection of the word.

28 . The apparatus of claim 26 , further comprising a rendering module to display the element on the touch screen.

         29 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
determining a touch-and-hold gesture on a location associated with the touch screen; displaying a graphical representation indicating selection an element displayed on the touch screen, the element being associated with the location; and performing, by a processor, one or more actions based at least in part on identifying a release of the touch-and-hold gesture.

30 . The computer-implemented method of claim 29 , wherein the one or more actions include at least one of:
displaying an enlarged view of an image on the touch screen; displaying a linked section of an electronic document on the touch screen; displaying a web page on the touch screen; displaying a definition or definition button for providing the definition of a word on the touch screen; or displaying a zoomed view of the element on the touch screen to allow selection of the word.

31 . The computer-implemented method of claim 29 , wherein the element includes at least one of:
a word; an image; a video; a hyperlink; an icon; or a group of words.

32 . The computer-implemented method of claim 29 , wherein the element includes one or more subelements and the one or more actions are associated with at least one of the subelements.
