Abstract

A tissue removal device is disclosed. In one arrangement, the tissue removal device comprises a cutting member operatively connected to an actuator assembly and a fixed member. The cutting member is configured to slide with respect to the fixed member in a reciprocating manner. The fixed member includes an upwardly extending foot plate that defines a contact surface that is configured with an uneven texture that serves as a grip to operatively retain material to be cut when the cutting member is moved toward the foot plate.

         29 . A tissue cutting device, comprising:
 a slidable cutting member defined by an open distal end and an open proximal end, the slidable cutting member operatively connected to an actuator assembly; and   an axially fixed inner blade having an upwardly extending cutting surface disposed on a distal end thereof, wherein the inner blade includes a fluid opening therethrough, wherein the fluid opening is positioned adjacent to the distal end of the inner blade;   wherein the fluid opening is in communication with a fluid passage disposed beneath the inner blade;   wherein the slidable cutting member is configured for reciprocating movement with respect to the axially fixed inner blade; and   wherein a distal end of the slidable cutting member and the upwardly extending cutting surface cooperates to define a tissue receiving opening.   
     
     
         30 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 29 , wherein a vacuum source is operatively connected to a proximal end of the cutting member so as to deliver vacuum through the cutting member. 
     
     
         31 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 29 , further comprising:
 a housing that carries a hub member, wherein a portion of the inner blade is fixedly secured to the hub member.   
     
     
         32 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 29 , further comprising an actuation assembly operatively connected to the cutting member, wherein actuation of the actuation assembly causes the cutting member to reciprocate over the inner blade. 
     
     
         33 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 32 , further comprising a shuttle member with a carrier member, wherein the shuttle member is connected to the actuation assembly and the carrier member is operatively connected to the cutting member such that actuation of the actuation assembly reciprocates the outer cannula. 
     
     
         34 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 33 , further comprising a biasing member operatively connected to the shuttle member, wherein the biasing members bias the cutting member into a retracted position by which the distal end of the cutting member is moved away from the distal end of the inner blade. 
     
     
         35 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 33 , further comprising a mounting sleeve, wherein the mounting sleeve is mounted on the carrier member and the cutting member is fixedly secured to the mounting sleeve such that the outer cannula moves with the shuttle member. 
     
     
         36 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 35 , further comprising a rotation dial fixedly attached to the mounting sleeve such that when the rotation dial is actuated, the mounting sleeve rotates. 
     
     
         37 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 30 , wherein the cutting member further comprises a vent aperture extending through a sidewall thereof and a sealing member configured to seal the vent aperture when the distal end of the cutting member is moved toward the distal end of the inner blade. 
     
     
         38 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 37 , wherein the sealing member is carried by a sealing end of a mounting flange that is positioned proximally of the vent aperture and wherein the vent aperture is sealed when the sealing end is received within a chamber formed in a housing of the tissue cutting device. 
     
     
         39 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 31 , wherein the hub member further comprises an irrigation aperture that is in communication with an irrigation port formed through the housing, the irrigation aperture delivering irrigation to the fluid passaged defined by the inner blade and the cutting member. 
     
     
         40 . The tissue cutting device of  claim 29 , wherein the inner blade further comprises a grooved surface and opposing bearing surfaces, wherein the grooved surface cooperates with an inner lumen of the cutting member to define the fluid passage, and wherein the opposing bearing surfaces are generally configured to correspond to a shape of the inner lumen.
