Abstract

This invention relates generally to nucleic acid sequences encoding proteins that are related to the presence of seed storage compounds in plants. More specifically, the present invention relates to Arabidopsis thaliana, Brassica napus, Glycine max and Oryza sativa nucleic acid sequences encoding sugar and lipid metabolism regulator proteins and the use of these sequences in transgenic plants. In particular, the invention is directed to methods fir manipulating sugar-related compounds and for increasing oil level and altering the fatty acid composition in plants and seeds. The invention further relates to methods of using these novel plant polypeptides to stimulate plant growth and/or to increase yield and/or composition of seed storage compounds.

         4 . The vector of  claim 3 , wherein the vector is an expression vector. 
     
     
         5 . A host cell comprising (1) the polynucleotide of  claim 1 ; or (2) a vector comprising said polynucleotide. 
     
     
         6 . A method for the manufacture of a polypeptide being capable of increasing the seed storage compound content when expressed in a transgenic plant comprising:
 (a) expressing the polynucleotide of  claim 1  in a host cell; and   (b) obtaining the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide from the host cell.   
     
     
         7 . A polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         8 . An antibody which specifically recognizes the polypeptide of  claim 7 . 
     
     
         9 . A transgenic non-human organism comprising (1) the polynucleotide of  claim 1 ; (2) a vector comprising the polynucleotide; or (3) a host cell comprising the polynucleotide or the vector. 
     
     
         10 . The transgenic non-human organism of  claim 9 , wherein the non-human transgenic organism is a plant. 
     
     
         11 . A method for manufacture of a lipid or a fatty acid comprising:
 (a) cultivating the host cell of  claim 5  under conditions allowing synthesis of the lipid or fatty acid; and   (b) obtaining the lipid or fatty acid from the host cell.   
     
     
         12 . A method for manufacture of a lipid or a fatty acid comprising:
 (a) cultivating the transgenic non-human organism of  claim 9  under conditions allowing synthesis of the lipid or fatty acid; and   (b) obtaining the lipid or fatty acid from the transgenic non-human organism.   
     
     
         13 . A method for manufacture of a lipid or a fatty acid comprising:

         15 . A method for manufacture of a transgenic plant having a modified amount of a seed storage compound relative to a corresponding non-transgenic control plant comprising:
 (a) introducing the polynucleotide of  claim 1  into a plant cell; and   (b) generating a transgenic plant from the plant cell, wherein the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide modifies the amount of the seed storage compound in the transgenic plant.   
     
     
         16 . A method for manufacture of a transgenic plant having a modified amount of a seed storage compound relative to a corresponding non-transgenic control plant comprising:
 (a) introducing a polynucleotide comprising the nucleic acid sequence as shown in any one of SEQ ID NOs: 139, 141, 143, 1145, 147, 523, 525, 527, 529, 531, 533, 535, 537, 539, 584, 617, 619, 637, 639, 641, 767, 769, 808, 810, 812 or 814 or encoding an amino acid sequence as shown in any one of SEQ ID NOs: 140, 142, 144, 146, 148, 524, 526, 528, 530, 532, 534, 536, 538, 540, 585, 618, 620, 638, 640, 642, 768, 770, 809, 811, 813 or 815 into a plant cell; and   (b) generating a transgenic plant from the plant cell, wherein the polypeptide encoded by the polynucleotide modifies the amount of the seed storage compound in the transgenic plaint.   
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the amount of seed storage compound is increased compared to a non-transgenic control plant. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the seed storage compound is a lipid or a fatty acid.
