1 - 24 . (canceled)

         25 . A method for providing media listings, the method comprising:
 receiving media listings and data that includes a condition for selecting a subset of the media listings; detecting situational data; determining, using the detected situational data, whether the condition for selecting the subset of the media listings is satisfied; in response to determining that the condition for selecting the subset of the media listings is satisfied, generating the subset of the media listings for display.

         26 . The method defined in claim 25 wherein generating the subset of media listings for display comprises generating the subset of media listings for display in a browse display that provides a user with an opportunity to browse through the subset of media listings.

         27 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the media listings are video-on-demand program listings.

         28 . The method defined in claim 25 wherein generating the subset of media listings for display comprises generating the subset of media listings for display in a screening room that provides a user with an opportunity to preview a video-on-demand program associated with the subset of video-on-demand listings.

         29 . The method defined in claim 25 wherein the detected situational data comprises a user preference profile.

         30 . The method defined in claim 25 further comprising:
 generating a selection log that includes a list of the selected media listings;
 generating a first database that includes data defining desirable selections of media listings;
 generating a second database that includes data defining undesirable selections of media listings; and
 updating a promotional philosophy based on the selection log, the first database and the second database.

         31 . The method defined in claim 25 , wherein the data that includes a condition for selecting a subset of the media listings comprises data that identifies the subset of the media listings and data that identifies situational data for selecting the subset of media listings.

         32 . The method defined in claim 25 , wherein the situation data comprises at least one of a user-selected media listing, a channel line up, weather data, local channels, available promotional media, and a user profile.

         33 . The method defined in claim 25 , further comprising receiving second data that includes a second condition for selecting a second subset of the media listings.

         34 . The method defined in claim 33 , further comprising:
 determining, using the detected situational data, whether the second condition for selecting the second subset of the media listings is satisfied;
 in response to determining that the second condition for selecting the second subset of the media listings is satisfied, generating the second subset of the media listings for display.

         35 . A system for providing media listings, the system comprising:
 control circuitry configured to:
 receive media listings and data that includes a condition for selecting a subset of the media listings;
 detect situational data;
 determine, using the detected situational data, whether the condition for selecting the subset of the media listings is satisfied;
 in response to determining that the condition for selecting the subset of the media listings is satisfied, generate the subset of the media listings for display.

         36 . The system defined in claim 35 wherein the control circuitry is configured to generate the subset of media listings for display by generating the subset of media listings for display in a browse display that provides a user with an opportunity to browse through the subset of media listings.

         37 . The system of claim 35 , wherein the media listings are video-on-demand program listings.

         38 . The system defined in claim 35 wherein the control circuitry is configured to generate the subset of media listings for display by generating the subset of media listings for display in a screening room that provides a user with an opportunity to preview a video-on-demand program associated with the subset of video-on-demand listings.

         39 . The system defined in claim 35 wherein the detected situational data comprises a user preference profile.

         40 . The system defined in claim 35 wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:
 generate a selection log that includes a list of the selected media listings;
 generate a first database that includes data defining desirable selections of media listings;
 generate a second database that includes data defining undesirable selections of media listings; and
 update a promotional philosophy based on the selection log, the first database and the second database.

         41 . The system defined in claim 35 , wherein the data that includes a condition for selecting a subset of the media listings comprises data that identifies the subset of the media listings and data that identifies situational data for selecting the subset of media listings.

         42 . The system defined in claim 35 , wherein the situation data comprises at least one of a user-selected media listing, a channel line up, weather data, local channels, available promotional media, and a user profile.

         43 . The system defined in claim 35 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to receive second data that includes a second condition for selecting a second subset of the media listings.

         44 . The system defined in claim 43 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:
 determine, using the detected situational data, whether the second condition for selecting the second subset of the media listings is satisfied;
 in response to determining that the second condition for selecting the second subset of the media listings is satisfied, generate the second subset of the media listings for display.
