Claims

Abstract

Systems, apparatus and methods are provided for generating, delivering, processing and displaying video data to preserve the video creator=s creative intent. Metadata which may be used to guide the processing and display of the video data is dynamically generated and embedded in the video data throughout a video delivery pipeline. The metadata may be embedded in the guard bits or least significant bits of chrominance channels of video data. Methods are provided for managing the encoding, delivery and decoding of the metadata to avoid unintentional communication of reserved words, minimize image artifacts which may result from overwriting least significant bits with metadata, prioritize delivery of metadata in the event of limited metadata bandwidth, and facilitate timely delivery of metadata to a downstream device.

1 . A display, comprising:
 a processor configured to receive image data comprising metadata and post-production adjusted image data, said meta-data comprising an identification of parameters of a post-production editing reference display used to produce the post-production adjusted image data;   the processor further configured to extract the metadata and at least one of configure the display subsystem and processing the video data based at least in part on the metadata.   
     
     
         2 . The display according to  claim 1 , wherein at least one of a dynamic range and color gamut of the display is different than the post-production editing reference display. 
     
     
         3 . The display according to  claim 1 , wherein at least one of a dynamic range and color gamut of the display is greater than the post-production editing reference display. 
     
     
         4 . The display according to  claim 1 , wherein the display comprises a contrast ratio and color gamut greater than P3. 
     
     
         5 . The display according to  claim 1 , wherein the display comprises a contrast ratio and color gamut greater than rec.709 
     
     
         6 . The display according to  claim 1 , wherein the image data is in a standardized format and the metadata is written over a plurality of standardized bits in the image data. 
     
     
         7 . The display according to  claim 6 , wherein the over-written bits comprise non-data bits in the standardized format. 
     
     
         8 . The display according to  claim 6 , wherein the over-written bits cause the image data to be in a non-standard but compatible format. 
     
     
         9 . The display according to  claim 6 , wherein the overwritten bits only overwrite a same category of standardized bits. 
     
     
         10 . A video delivery system comprising:
 a transmission medium for transmitting video data to an end user display, wherein the video data comprising metadata and post-production adjusted image data, said meta-data comprising an identification of parameters of a post-production editing reference display used to produce the post-production adjusted image data.   
     
     
         11 . The video delivery system according to  claim 10 , wherein at least one of a dynamic range and color gamut of the end user display is different than the post-production editing reference display. 
     
     
         12 . The video delivery system according to  claim 10 , wherein at least one of a dynamic range and color gamut of the end user display is greater than the post-production editing reference display. 
     
     
         13 . The video delivery system according to  claim 10 , wherein the end user display comprises a contrast ratio and color gamut greater than P3. 
     
     
         14 . The video delivery system according to  claim 10 , wherein the end user display comprises a contrast ratio and color gamut greater than rec.709. 
     
     
         15 . A video delivery system according to  claim 10 , wherein the image data is in a standardized format and the metadata is written over a plurality of standardized bits in the image data. 
     
     
         16 . The video delivery system according to  claim 15 , wherein the over-written bits comprise non-data bits in the standardized format. 
     
     
         17 . The video delivery system according to  claim 15 , wherein the over-written bits cause the image data to be in a non-standard but compatible format. 
     
     
         18 . The video delivery system according to  claim 15 , wherein the overwritten bits only overwrite a same category of standardized bits. 
     
     
         19 . The video delivery system according to  claim 10 , wherein the end-user display comprises an HDR display using dual modulation. 
     
     
         20 . The video delivery system according to  claim 1 , wherein the video distribution system comprises at least one of satellite, cable, and DVD.
