Locking vial adaptors and methods
Abstract
In certain embodiments, a vial adaptor for removing liquid contents from a vial comprises a piercing member and a bag. The bag can be contained within the piercing member such that the bag is introduced to the vial when the vial adaptor is coupled with the vial. In some embodiments, the bag expands within the vial as liquid is removed from the vial via the adaptor, thereby regulating pressure within the vial. In other embodiments, a vial comprises a bag for regulating pressure within the vial as liquid is removed therefrom. In some embodiments, a vial adaptor is coupled with the vial in order to remove the liquid. In some embodiments, as the liquid is removed from the vial via the adaptor, the bag expands within the vial, and in other embodiments, the bag contracts within the vial.

1 . A vial adaptor assembly for withdrawing medicinal fluid from a vial, the assembly comprising:
a housing portion comprising:
a medical connector interface configured to couple the vial adaptor assembly with a medical device; and
a sheath comprising a first slot portion and a second slot portion; and
a locking mechanism comprising one or more clips, the locking mechanism configured to secure the housing portion to an insertion member, wherein the one or more clips are biased to prevent separation of the insertion member from the housing portion when the housing portion is connected to the insertion member, wherein the locking mechanism has a first position and a second position, wherein in the first position, the one or more clips are in a closed position and configured to secure the housing portion to the insertion member, wherein in the second position, the one or more clips are in an open position and configured not to secure the insertion member to the housing portion, and wherein the one or more clips move from the closed position to the open position as the insertion member moves from the first slot portion to the second slot portion.
2 . The vial adaptor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a piercing member, the piercing member comprising a channel configured to provide fluid communication between an interior of the medical device and an interior of the vial.
3 . The vial adaptor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the insertion member comprises a regulator channel, and wherein the regulator channel is configured to permit ambient air to flow into the regulator channel as medicinal fluid is withdrawn from the vial, thereby equalizing pressure within the vial.
4 . The vial adaptor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the insertion member further comprises a protrusion extending radially outward from a proximal end of the insertion member, the protrusion configured to fit in a locking portion of a slot at least partially defined by the one or more clips when the housing portion is connected to the insertion member.
5 . The vial adaptor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing portion further comprises a sealing member protruding from an inner perimeter of the housing portion, the sealing member configured to apply friction against the insertion member when the insertion member is connected to the housing portion.
6 . The vial adaptor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the locking mechanism further comprises a channel, the channel of the locking mechanism having a proximal portion and a distal portion.
7 . The vial adaptor assembly of claim 6 , wherein the channel of the locking mechanism is narrower at the distal portion than at the proximal portion.
8 . The vial adaptor assembly of claim 6 , wherein the locking mechanism further comprises a flange configured to interface with the channel, and wherein the channel restricts movement of the flange.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
