Abstract
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for completing a transaction using a wireless mobile communication channel and another communication channel, particularly another communication channel that provides for near field radio channels (NFC), as well as other communication channels, such as Bluetooth or WIFI. The present invention also provides a method of completing a transaction in which a management server assists a transaction server and a point of sale terminal in forwarding transaction information to a hand-held mobile device, with the transaction having originated from the hand-held mobile device. There is also provided a hand-held mobile device that wirelessly communicates between a secure element and a radio element that are associated with the hand-held mobile device.

1 . A method for conducting a near field communication transaction using a hand-held mobile device, the method comprising:
detecting a near field communication trigger from a point-of-sale terminal when the hand-held mobile device is in close proximity to the point-of-sale terminal, the point-of-sale terminal configured for near field communications, wherein the near field communication trigger is detected by a secure element coupled to the hand-held mobile device, the hand-held mobile device including a first processor, a first memory, and a first radio transceiver configured for near field communications; executing a payment application stored in a second memory of the secure element, wherein the payment application is executed by a second processor included in the secure element in response to the near field communication trigger.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the hand-held mobile device but electrically decoupled from electrical interior components of the hand-held mobile device.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the hand-held mobile device and wirelessly coupled to electrical interior components of the hand-held mobile device.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is included within the body of a memory card configured for placement in a memory card slot in the hand-held mobile device.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is embedded within the body of the mobile communication device.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment application is executable to permit a user to perform a ticketing transaction.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment application is executable to permit a user to perform an Internet commerce transaction.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment application is executable to permit a user to perform an Internet commerce transaction.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment application is executable to permit a user to perform a transaction involving storage of a digital artifact, provide payment information, or provide banking information.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the hand-held mobile device is configured to use a first communication channel.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the first communication channel implements a global system for mobile (gsm) communication protocol.
12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the first communication channel implements a code division multiple access (cdma) communication protocol.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is configured to use a second communication channel.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the second communication channel implements a near field communications (nfc) communication protocol.
15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the second communication channel implements a bluetooth communication protocol.
16 . A secure element for conducting a near field communication transaction, the secure element comprising:
a near field communication detector configured to identify a near field communication trigger from a point-of-sale terminal when a hand-held mobile device is in close proximity to the point-of-sale terminal, the point-of-sale terminal configured for near field communications, wherein the hand-held mobile device includes a first processor, a first memory, and a first radio transceiver configured for near field communications; a processor configured to execute a payment application in response to the near field communication trigger, wherein the secure element is coupled to a hand-held mobile device.
17 . The secure element of claim 16 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the hand-held mobile device but electrically decoupled from electrical interior components of the hand-held mobile device.
18 . The secure element of claim 16 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the hand-held mobile device and wirelessly coupled to electrical interior components of the hand-held mobile device.
19 . The secure element of claim 16 , wherein the secure element is included within the body of a memory card configured for placement in a memory card slot in the hand-held mobile device.
