Head guard

Abstract

A protective hat is provided. The protective hat can have triangular multi-layered sidewalls that are sewn to collectively form a dome. The triangular multi-layered sidewalls have a fabric layer and a side padding layer. The side padding layer can be a rate dependent padding material

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A protective hat, comprising:
 a plurality of triangular multi-layered sidewalls that are sewn to collectively form a dome, wherein the dome defines a circular opening for a head of a wearer, wherein the plurality of triangular multi-layered sidewalls comprises:   a first triangular multi-layered sidewall and a second triangular multi-layered sidewall, wherein a first portion of the first triangular multi-layered sidewall is sewn to a first portion of the second triangular multi-layered sidewall to collectively form at least a portion of the dome, and wherein each of the first and second triangular multi-layered sidewalls comprises:
 an inner fabric layer; 
 an outer fabric layer, wherein the inner fabric layer is attached to the outer fabric layer to define a pocket; and 
 a side padding layer positioned within the pocket, the side padding layer comprising a rate dependent padding material; and 
   a brim extending outwardly from the dome.   
     
     
         2 . The protective hat of  claim 1 , wherein the side padding layer of each of the first and second triangular multi-layered sidewalls is not visible to an observer of the dome. 
     
     
         3 . The protective hat of  claim 1 , wherein the side padding layer of each of the first and second triangular multi-layered sidewalls is disconnected from each of the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer. 
     
     
         4 . The protective hat of  claim 1 , wherein the side padding layer of the first triangular multi-layered sidewall has a first maximum thickness and the side padding layer of the second triangular multi-layered sidewall has a second maximum thickness. 
     
     
         5 . The protective hat of  claim 4 , wherein the first maximum thickness is substantially the same as the second maximum thickness. 
     
     
         6 . The protective hat of  claim 4 , wherein the first maximum thickness is greater than the second maximum thickness. 
     
     
         7 . The protective hat of  claim 6 , wherein the dome has a front portion and a side portion. 
     
     
         8 . The protective hat of  claim 7 , wherein the first triangular multi-layered sidewall is positioned within the front portion of the dome. 
     
     
         9 . The protective hat of  claim 7 , wherein the first triangular multi-layered sidewall is positioned within the side portion of the dome. 
     
     
         10 . The protective hat of  claim 1 , wherein the dome has a triangular multi-layered sidewall positioned within a front portion of the dome and a triangular multi-layered sidewall positioned within a rear portion of the dome. 
     
     
         11 . The protective hat of  claim 10 , wherein a thickness of a side padding layer of the triangular multi-layered sidewalls positioned within the front portion of the dome is greater than the thickness of a side padding layer of the triangular multi-layered sidewall positioned within the rear portion of the dome. 
     
     
         12 . The protective hat of  claim 1 , wherein the protective hat is a baseball-style hat. 
     
     
         13 . A protective hat, comprising:
 a dome providing an opening to accept a head of a wearer, the dome comprising a plurality of multi-layered sidewalls, wherein each of the plurality of multi-layered sidewalls comprises:
 an inner fabric layer and an outer fabric layer, the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer cooperating to define a pocket; and 
 a side padding layer positioned within the pocket, the side padding layer comprising a rate dependent material; and 
   a brim extending outwardly from the dome.   
     
     
         14 . The protective hat of  claim 13 , wherein the side padding layer is disconnected from each of the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer. 
     
     
         15 . The protective hat of  claim 13 , wherein one or more of the multi-layered sidewalls is triangular. 
     
     
         16 . The protective hat of  claim 15 , wherein each of the multi-layered sidewalls is triangular. 
     
     
         17 . The protective hat of  claim 16 , wherein the plurality of multi-layered sidewalls comprises a first multi-layered sidewall and a second multi-layered sidewall, wherein the first multi-layered sidewall is positioned within a front portion of the dome and the second multi-layered sidewall is positioned within a rear portion of the dome, wherein the bill extends from the front portion of the dome. 
     
     
         18 . The protective hat of  claim 17 , wherein the side padding layer of the first multi-layered sidewall has a first maximum thickness and the side padding layer of the second multi-layered sidewall has a second maximum thickness. 
     
     
         19 . The protective hat of  claim 18 , wherein the first maximum thickness is greater than the second maximum thickness. 
     
     
         20 . A baseball-style hat, comprising:
 a plurality of triangular multi-layered sidewalls that are sewn to collectively form a dome, wherein the dome defines a circular opening for a head of a wearer, wherein the plurality of triangular multi-layered sidewalls comprises a first triangular multi-layered sidewall and a second triangular multi-layered sidewall, wherein a first portion of the first triangular multi-layered sidewall is sewn to a first portion of the second triangular multi-layered sidewall to collectively form at least a portion of the dome, and wherein each of the first and second triangular multi-layered sidewalls comprises:
 an inner fabric layer; 
 an outer fabric layer, wherein the inner fabric layer is attached to the outer fabric layer to define a pocket; and 
 a side padding layer positioned within the pocket, the side padding layer comprising a rate dependent padding material; and 
   a brim extending outwardly from the dome.   wherein the first triangular multi-layered sidewall is positioned within a front portion of the dome and the second triangular multi-layered sidewall is positioned within a rear portion of the dome, wherein the bill extends from the front portion of the dome, wherein the side padding layer of the first triangular multi-layered sidewall has a first maximum thickness and the side padding layer of the second triangular multi-layered sidewall has a second maximum thickness.   
     
     
         21 . The baseball-style hat of  claim 20 , wherein the first maximum thickness is greater than the second maximum thickness. 
     
     
         22 . The baseball-style hat of  claim 21 , wherein the side padding layer is vented and the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer are each configured to provide moisture wicking properties.
