Icu/ccu/nicu patient gown

Abstract

An ICU/CCU/NICU garment for a patient during hospitalization includes an upper portion of the garment, a lower portion of the garment, and a rear portion of the garment. The upper garment portion includes a pair of front panels releasably connected to each other and to a neck panel leaving an open back. The lower portion of the garment includes an abdominal panel having a pair of leg extensions and a central genital flap leaving an open back. The rear portion having a rear panel is releasably attached to each of the upper portion and the lower portion to provide a desired degree of coverage, while facilitating a selective exposure of the posterior of the patient.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A garment to be worn by a patient during hospitalization in an ICU/CCU/NICU setting, the garment comprising:
 an upper portion adapted to cover an anterior upper body of the patient, the upper portion including a pair of upper panels, each of the upper panels having a superior edge, an inferior edge, a side edge, and a central edge, one of the upper panels having an elongate rear neck panel permanently affixed to the superior edge thereof and extending from the superior edge of the one of the upper panels toward the other of the other upper panels, the neck panel having a free end releasably attached to the superior edge of the other of the upper panels with a first cooperating fastener, the neck panel and the front panels defining an opening for receiving a head and a neck of the patient when the front panels are releasably attached at the central edges of the front panels with a second cooperating fastener;   a lower portion adapted to cover an anterior lower body of the patient, the lower portion having an abdominal panel with a superior edge disposed at approximately a navel level of the patient, a pair of inferior edges disposed at a mid-calf level of the patient, a pair of side edges, and a pair of central edges, each of the central edges extending upwardly from one of the inferior edges and away from the side edges to a genital panel over a genital area of the patient, the central edges, the side edges, and the inferior edges of the abdominal panel defining a pair of leg extensions configured to cover the front legs of the patient, the superior edge of the abdominal panel releasably attached to the inferior edges of each of the upper panels with a pair of third fasteners, the inferior edges of each of the leg extensions having fourth cooperating fasteners disposed at opposite corners thereof, the fourth cooperating fasteners being releasably attached to permit each of the leg extensions to encircle a leg of the patient at mid-calf level at only a hemline of the leg extension, the genital panel providing a modest coverage for the patient wherein the genital panel can be moved to expose the genital area of the patient without moving the leg extensions from covering the anterior lower body of the patient; and   a separate rear portion adapted to selectively cover a posterior of the patient, the rear portion having a rear panel with an upper edge, a lower edge, and a pair of side edges, the side edges releasably attached to the side edges of one of the upper portion and the lower portion at the mid-hip level of the patient with fifth and sixth cooperating fasteners, and opposite corners of the upper edge of the rear panel releasably attached to the superior edges of the upper panels of the upper portion with seventh and eighth cooperating fasteners,   wherein the rear portion can be selectively attached to and detached completely from the garment solely by the fifth through the eighth fasteners, wherein a posterior of the patient is completely exposed from a shoulder level of the patient to a mid-calf level of the patient when the rear portion is open, wherein the posterior of the patient is completely covered from the shoulder level of the patient to the mid-calf level of the patient when the rear portion is closed, and wherein when the garment is placed on the patient lying face up in a bed the rear portion can be positioned beside the patient and attached to the garment by at least one of the fifth band seventh fasteners or at least one of the sixth and eighth fasteners to militate against the occurrence of skin irritations and bed sores on the patient.   
     
     
         2 . The garment according to  claim 1  wherein the genital panel is formed by a U-shaped cut in the abdominal panel and can be moved toward the superior edge of the abdominal panel to expose the genital area of the patient without moving the leg extensions from covering the anterior lower body of the patient. 
     
     
         3 . The garment according to  claim 1  wherein the genital panel is fixedly attached at the superior edge of the abdominal panel and extends downwardly to an area between an intersection point of the leg extensions and the inferior edges of the leg extensions, the remainder of the genital panel being free to move with respect to the abdominal panel and the leg extensions and arranged so as to overlap exterior portions of the leg extensions and an exterior portion of the abdominal panel and provide a modest coverage for the patient, wherein the genital panel can be moved to expose the genital area of the patient without moving the leg extensions from covering the anterior lower body of the patient. 
     
     
         4 . A garment to be worn by a patient during hospitalization in an ICU/CCU/NICU setting, the garment comprising:
 an upper portion adapted to cover an anterior upper body of the patient, the upper portion including a pair of upper panels, each of the upper panels having a superior edge, an inferior edge, a side edge, and a central edge, each of the central edges having an angled portion extending downwardly from the superior edge and away from the side edge to a point approximately midway between the superior edge and the inferior edge of each of the upper panels, one of the upper panels having an elongate rear neck panel permanently affixed to the superior edge thereof and extending from the superior edge of the one of the upper panels toward the other of the other upper panels, the neck panel having a free end releasably attached to the superior edge of the other of the upper panels with a first cooperating fastener, the neck panel and the front panels defining an opening for receiving a head and a neck of the patient when the front panels are releasably attached at the central edges of the front panels with a second cooperating fastener and the end of the neck panel is releasably attached to the superior edge of the other of the upper panels with the first cooperating fastener;   a lower portion adapted to cover an anterior lower body of the patient, the lower portion having an abdominal panel with a superior edge disposed at approximately a navel level of the patient, a pair of inferior edges disposed at a mid-calf level of the patient, a pair of side edges, and a pair of central edges, each of the central edges extending upwardly from one of the inferior edges and away from the side edges to a genital flap over a genital area of the patient, the central edges, the side edges, and the inferior edges of the abdominal panel defining a pair of leg extensions configured to cover the front legs of the patient, the superior edge of the abdominal panel releasably attached to the inferior edges of each of the upper panels with a pair of third fasteners, the inferior edges of each of the leg extensions having fourth cooperating fasteners disposed at opposite corners thereof, the fourth cooperating fasteners being releasably attached to permit each of the leg extensions to encircle a leg of the patient at mid-calf level at only a hemline of the leg extension, the genital flap being formed by a U-shaped cut in the abdominal panel and providing a modest coverage for the patient; and   a separate rear portion adapted to selectively cover a posterior of the patient, the rear portion having a rear panel with an upper edge, a lower edge, and a pair of side edges, the side edges releasably attached to the side edges of one of the upper portion and the lower portion at the mid-hip level of the patient with fifth and sixth cooperating fasteners, and opposite corners of the upper edge of the rear panel releasably attached to the superior edges of the upper panels of the upper portion with seventh and eighth cooperating fasteners,   wherein the garment completely exposes a posterior of the patient from a shoulder level of the patient to a mid-calf level of the patient when worn by the patient with the rear panel of the rear portion open, and completely covers the posterior of the patient from the shoulder level of the patient to the mid-calf level of the patient when worn by the patient with the rear panel of the rear portion closed.   
     
     
         5 . The garment according to  claim 4 , wherein the second cooperating fastener for releasably attaching the central edges of the front panels includes a strip fixedly attached to one of the front panels, the strip having the fastener attached to an end thereof for releasable attachment to the other of the front panels. 
     
     
         6 . The garment according to  claim 4 , wherein each of the third cooperating fasteners for releasably attaching the abdominal panel to the front panels includes a strip fixedly attached to one of the front panels, the strip having the fastener attached to an end thereof for releasable attachment to the abdominal panel. 
     
     
         7 . The garment according to  claim 4 , wherein each of the fourth cooperating fasteners disposed at the opposite corners of the inferior edges of each of the leg extensions includes a strip fixedly attached to one of the corners, the strip having the fastener attached to an end thereof for releasable attachment to the other of the corners of the leg extension at the hemline only. 
     
     
         8 . The garment according to  claim 4 , wherein the rear portion is formed from a substantially rectangular, unitary panel of material. 
     
     
         9 . The garment according to  claim 4 , including a pouch panel fixedly attached to one of the front panels and sized to receive a telemetry pack and a plurality of telemetry leads therein, a slit formed though the one of the front panels beneath the pouch panel through which the telemetry leads are provided to the patient. 
     
     
         10 . The garment according to  claim 4 , wherein each of the cooperating fasteners includes one of a male-female snap, a hook and loop fastener, and a button and button hole. 
     
     
         11 . The garment according to  claim 4 , wherein the neck panel is integrally formed with the one of the upper panels. 
     
     
         12 . The garment according to  claim 4 , wherein the central edges of the leg extensions terminate at the cut forming an edge of the genital flap. 
     
     
         13 . A garment to be worn by a patient during hospitalization in an ICU/CCU/NICU setting, the garment comprising:
 an upper portion adapted to cover an anterior upper body of the patient, the upper portion including a pair of upper panels, each of the upper panels having a superior edge, an inferior edge, a side edge, and a central edge, each of the central edges having an angled portion extending downwardly from the superior edge and away from the side edge to a point approximately midway between the superior edge and the inferior edge of each of the upper panels, one of the upper panels having an elongate rear neck panel permanently affixed to the superior edge thereof and extending from the superior edge of the one of the upper panels toward the other of the other upper panels, the neck panel having a free end releasably attached to the superior edge of the other of the upper panels with a first cooperating fastener, the neck panel and the upper panels defining an opening for receiving a head and a neck of the patient when the upper panels are releasably attached at the central edges of the upper panels with a second cooperating fastener and the end of the neck panel is releasably attached to the superior edge of the other of the upper panels with the first cooperating fastener;   a lower portion adapted to cover an anterior lower body of the patient, the lower portion having an abdominal panel with a superior edge disposed at approximately a navel level of the patient, a pair of inferior edges disposed at a mid-calf level of the patient, a pair of side edges, and a pair of central edges, each of the central edges extending upwardly from one of the inferior edges and away from the side edges to an intersection point between a genital area of the patient and the superior edge of the abdominal panel forming a continuous edge, the central edges, the side edges, and the inferior edges of the abdominal panel defining a pair of leg extensions configured to cover the front legs of the patient, the superior edge of the abdominal panel releasably attached to the inferior edges of each of the upper panels with a pair of third fasteners, the inferior edges of each of the leg extensions having fourth cooperating fasteners disposed at opposite corners thereof, the fourth cooperating fasteners being releasably attached to permit each of the leg extensions to encircle a leg of the patient at mid-calf level at only a hemline of the leg extension, the lower portion of the garment further including a genital panel fixedly attached at the superior edge of the abdominal panel and extending downwardly to an area between the intersection point of the leg extensions and the inferior edges of the leg extensions, the remainder of the genital panel being free to move with respect to the abdominal panel and the leg extensions and arranged so as to overlap exterior portions of the leg extensions and an exterior portion of the abdominal panel and provide a modest coverage for the patient, wherein the genital panel can be moved to expose the genital area of the patient without moving the leg extensions from covering the anterior lower body of the patient; and   a single, unitary and separate rear portion comprising a rectangular panel adapted to selectively cover upper and lower portions of a posterior of the patient, the rear portion having an upper edge, a lower edge, and a pair of side edges, the side edges releasably attached to the side edges of one of the upper portion and the lower portion at the mid-hip level of the patient with fifth and sixth cooperating fasteners, and opposite corners of the upper edge of the rear portion releasably attached to the superior edges of the upper panels of the upper portion with seventh and eighth cooperating fasteners, the fifth through eighth fasteners being the only attachment of the rear portion to the upper portion and the lower portion thereby facilitating quick release of the rear portion from the upper and lower portions, wherein the rear portion is entirely separable from the upper portion and the lower portion, and the rear portion extends continuously from the superior edges of the upper portion to the inferior edges of the lower portion,   wherein the garment completely exposes a posterior of the patient from a shoulder level of the patient to a mid-calf level of the patient when worn by the patient with the rectangular panel of the rear portion open, and completely covers the posterior of the patient from the shoulder level of the patient to the mid-calf level of the patient when worn by the patient with the rectangular panel of the rear portion closed.   
     
     
         14 . The garment according to  claim 13 , wherein the second cooperating fastener for releasably attaching the central edges of the front panels includes a strip fixedly attached to one of the front panels, the strip having the fastener attached to an end thereof for releasable attachment to the other of the front panels. 
     
     
         15 . The garment according to  claim 13 , wherein each of the third cooperating fasteners for releasably attaching the abdominal panel to the front panels includes a strip fixedly attached to one of the front panels, the strip having the fastener attached to an end thereof for releasable attachment to the abdominal panel. 
     
     
         16 . The garment according to  claim 13 , wherein each of the fourth cooperating fasteners disposed at the opposite corners of the inferior edges of each of the leg extensions includes a strip fixedly attached to one of the corners, the strip having the fastener attached to an end thereof for releasable attachment to the other of the corners of the leg extension at the hemline only. 
     
     
         17 . The garment according to  claim 13 , wherein the rear portion is formed from a substantially rectangular, unitary panel of material. 
     
     
         18 . The garment according to  claim 13 , wherein each of the cooperating fasteners includes one of a male-female snap, a hook and loop fastener, and a button and button hole. 
     
     
         19 . The garment according to  claim 13 , wherein the neck panel is integrally formed with the one of the upper panels. 
     
     
         20 . The garment according to  claim 13 , wherein the intersection point of the central edges of the leg extensions is disposed at an apex of a substantially U-shaped edge portion connecting the central edges.
