Abstract

This invention relates to an intervertebral motion disc having two motion surfaces and. wherein the radius of the upper articulation surface of the core member is greater than the radius of the lower articulation surface of the core member, and wherein the first articulation surface of the core member is spherical and the second articulation surface of the core member is curved and non-spherical.

We claim: 
     
         1 . An intervertebral motion disc comprising:
 a) an upper prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with an upper vertebral body, 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   b) a lower prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with a lower vertebral body, and 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   c) a core member comprising:
 i) an upper articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and having a radius, and 
 ii) a lower articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and having a radius, 
   
       wherein the core member is disposed between the endplates and oriented therein to produce an upper articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and the upper articulation surface of the core member, and a lower articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and the lower articulation surface of the core member, and 
       wherein the upper articulation interface forms a hemispherical interface, and the lower articulation interface forms a flat interface, 
       wherein the core has a blind recess extending into the core from the flat surface, and wherein the recess is non-articulating. 
     
     
         2 . An intervertebral motion disc comprising:
 a) an upper prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with an upper vertebral body, 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   b) a lower prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with a lower vertebral body, and 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   c) a core member comprising:
 i) an upper articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and having a radius, and 
 ii) a lower articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and having a radius, 
   
       wherein the core member is disposed between the endplates and oriented therein to produce an upper articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and the upper articulation surface of the core member, and a lower articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and the lower articulation surface of the core member, and 
       wherein the upper articulation interface forms a hemispherical interface, and the lower articulation interface forms a flat interface, and 
       wherein the core has a diameter and a blind recess extending from diametrically through the core. 
     
     
         3 . An intervertebral motion disc comprising:
 a) an upper prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with an upper vertebral body, 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   b) a lower prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with a lower vertebral body, and 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   c) a core member comprising:
 i) an upper articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and having a radius, and 
 ii) a lower articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and having a radius, 
   
       wherein the core member is disposed between the endplates and oriented therein to produce an upper articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and the upper articulation surface of the core member, and a lower articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and the lower articulation surface of the core member, and 
       wherein the upper articulation interface forms a hemispherical interface, and the lower articulation interface forms a flat interface, and 
       wherein the lower endplate further comprises a post, wherein the core comprises a recess, and wherein an upper face of the post is received in the recess. 
     
     
         4 . An intervertebral motion disc comprising:
 a) an upper prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with an upper vertebral body, 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   b) a lower prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with a lower vertebral body, and 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   c) a core member comprising:
 i) an upper articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and having a radius, and 
 ii) a lower articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and having a radius, 
   
       wherein the core member is disposed between the endplates and oriented therein to produce an upper articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and the upper articulation surface of the core member, and a lower articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and the lower articulation surface of the core member, and 
       wherein the upper articulation interface forms a hemispherical interface, and the lower articulation interface forms a flat interface, and 
       wherein the core has a recess extending therein, the lower endplate has a post extending therefrom, and wherein the post has an inner portion that is fully contained within the recess. 
     
     
         5 . An intervertebral motion disc comprising:
 a) an upper prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with an upper vertebral body, 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   b) a lower prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with a lower vertebral body, and 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   c) a core member comprising:
 i) an upper articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and having a radius, and 
 ii) a lower articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and having a radius, 
   
       wherein the core member is disposed between the endplates and oriented therein to produce an upper articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and the upper articulation surface of the core member, and a lower articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and the lower articulation surface of the core member, and 
       wherein the upper articulation interface forms a hemispherical interface, and the lower articulation interface forms a flat interface, and 
       wherein the endplate has a projection extending therefrom, and wherein the core has a sidewall having a retaining feature that cooperates with the projection. 
     
     
         6 . An intervertebral motion disc comprising:
 a) an upper prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with an upper vertebral body, 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   b) a lower prosthetic vertebral endplate comprising:
 i) an outer surface adapted to mate with a lower vertebral body, and 
 ii) an inner surface having a first articulation surface, 
   c) a core member comprising:
 i) an upper articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and having a radius, and 
 ii) a lower articulation surface adapted for articulation with the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and having a radius, 
   
       wherein the core member is disposed between the endplates and oriented therein to produce an upper articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the upper endplate and the upper articulation surface of the core member, and a lower articulation interface between the first articulation surface of the lower endplate and the lower articulation surface of the core member, and 
       wherein the upper articulation interface forms a hemispherical interface, and the lower articulation interface forms a flat interface, and 
       wherein the endplate has a recess depth (DE CH ) that is greater than a peripheral endplate depth (DE P ), and the recess depth extends past a plane of the peripheral outer surface of end plate.
