Abstract

A compressor includes a housing, a first scroll member, a second scroll member and a valve assembly. The first scroll member is positioned within the housing and includes a first end plate portion and a second end plate portion coupled to the first end plate portion and having a first spiral wrap extending therefrom. The first end plate portion and the second end plate portion define a discharge passage. The second scroll member is positioned within the housing and includes a second spiral wrap meshingly engaged with the first spiral wrap. The valve assembly is supported by at least one of the first end plate portion and the second end plate portion at a location radially outward from the discharge passage.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A compressor comprising:
a housing; a compression assembly including a first scroll member and a second scroll member positioned within said housing, said first scroll member having a first spiral wrap extending therefrom and engaged with a second spiral wrap of said second scroll member, said compression mechanism receiving refrigerant at a suction pressure at a radially outward location, discharging refrigerant at a discharge pressure from a discharge passage at a radially inward location, and compressing refrigerant to an intermediate pressure between said radially outward location and said radially inward location; a valve assembly supported by at least one of a first end plate portion and a second end plate portion at a location radially outward from said discharge passage, said valve assembly including a first valve overlying a first passage and in communication with said discharge pressure, a second valve overlying a second passage and in communication with said suction pressure, said first valve and said second valve being independently displaceable between open and closed positions, said first passage providing communication between said intermediate pressure and said discharge passage when said first valve is in the open position and said first passage being isolated from said discharge passage when said first valve is in the closed position, said second passage providing communication between said intermediate pressure and said suction pressure when said second valve is in the open position and said second passage being isolated from said suction pressure when said second valve is in the closed position.

2 . The compressor of claim 1 , further comprising a drive shaft engaged with said second scroll member to drive orbital displacement of said second scroll member relative to said first scroll member.

3 . The compressor of claim 1 , further comprising a first seal engaged with said housing and said first end plate portion and located within a recess defined in said first end plate portion.

4 . The compressor of claim 3 , wherein said first and second end plate portions define a biasing passage extending therethrough and providing communication between said recess and a pocket formed by said first and second spiral wraps.

5 . The compressor of claim 4 , further comprising a second seal located axially between and engaged with said first and second end plate portions.

6 . The compressor of claim 5 , wherein said second seal surrounds said biasing passage.

7 . The compressor of claim 1 , wherein said first valve is a first variable volume ratio valve and said first passage is a first variable volume ratio passage.

8 . The compressor of claim 7 , wherein said first valve includes a plurality of variable volume ratio valves including said first variable volume ratio valve.

9 . The compressor of claim 7 , wherein at least one of said first end plate portion and said second end plate portion defines multiple variable volume ratio passages including said first variable volume ratio passage in communication with said first variable volume ratio valve.

10 . The compressor of claim 1 , wherein said second valve is a first capacity modulation valve and said second passage is a first capacity modulation passage.

11 . The compressor of claim 10 , wherein said second valve includes a plurality of capacity modulation valves including said first capacity modulation valve.

12 . The compressor of claim 10 , wherein at least one of said first end plate portion and said second end plate portion defines multiple capacity modulation passages including said first capacity modulation passage in communication with said first capacity modulation valve.

         13 . A compressor comprising:
a housing; a first scroll member supported within said housing and including a first end plate defining a discharge passage in communication with a discharge pressure region, a first variable volume ratio passage, a second variable volume ratio passage, a first capacity modulation passage, and a second capacity modulation passage; a first spiral wrap extending from said first end plate; a second scroll member supported within said housing and including a second spiral wrap engaged with said first spiral wrap to form a series of pockets including a first of said series of pockets in communication with said first variable volume ratio passage, a second of said series of pockets in communication with said first capacity modulation passage, a third of said series of pockets in communication with said second variable volume ratio passage, and a fourth of said series of pockets in communication with said second capacity modulation passage; a first variable volume ratio valve in communication with said first variable volume ratio passage and controlling communication between said first of said series of pockets and said discharge pressure region and a second variable volume ratio valve in communication with said second variable volume ratio passage and controlling communication between said third of said series of pockets and said discharge pressure region independently from said first variable volume ratio valve; and a first capacity modulation valve in communication with said first capacity modulation passage and controlling communication between said second of said series of pockets and said suction pressure region and a second capacity modulation valve in communication with said second capacity modulation passage and controlling communication between said fourth of said series of pockets and said suction pressure region independently from said first capacity modulation valve.

14 . The compressor of claim 13 , further comprising a seal engaged with said first scroll member and said housing and defining a biasing chamber, said first end plate defining a biasing passage in communication with said biasing chamber and a third pocket formed by said first and second scroll members.

15 . The compressor of claim 14 , wherein said biasing passage is located radially outward relative to said first variable volume ratio passage and radially inward relative to said first capacity modulation passage.
