Abstract

A subscriber unit for use in a communication system includes a spread spectrum radio interface, responsive to a rate function signal from a base station, and first and second despreaders. The base station assigns the rate function spread-spectrum message channels and the first despreader recovers and modifies an information signal one of the spread spectrum message channels. The information channel mode is then modified for processing by the second despreader, with the second despreader supporting a different information signal rate. The subscriber unit has a capability of communicating with a dynamically changing a transmission rate of an information signal which includes multiple spread spectrum message channels. The system includes a closed loop power control system for maintaining a minimum system transmit power level for a radio carrier station and the subscriber units, and system capacity management for maintaining a maximum number of active subscriber units for improved system performance.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A wireless subscriber unit comprising:
a receiver configured to wirelessly receive a program and to store the program in a first memory location; a processor configured to determine whether the program was received correctly; on a condition that the program is determined to be received correctly, the processor further configured to store the program in a second memory location; and the processor further configured to reboot the wireless subscriber unit and load the program from the second memory location.

2 . The wireless subscriber unit of claim 1 wherein the program is received by a modem of the subscriber unit.

3 . The wireless subscriber unit of claim 2 wherein the modem is a CDMA modem.

4 . The wireless subscriber unit of claim 1 wherein the first memory location is in a FLASH memory.

5 . The wireless subscriber unit of claim 1 wherein the circuitry configured to reprogram the second memory location uses the program stored in the first memory location.

6 . The wireless subscriber unit of claim 1 wherein the second memory location is in a FLASH memory.

7 . The wireless subscriber unit of claim 1 wherein the controller receives current values of system parameters.

8 . The wireless subscriber unit of claim 7 wherein the current values are provided by a modem.

9 . The wireless subscriber unit of claim 7 wherein the current values are system noise interference levels, number of established calls, forward power control parameters, reverse power control parameters, time to access a channel, time to establish a channel or a number of dropped calls.

10 . A method implemented in a wireless subscriber unit, the method comprising:
receiving, by a receiver, a program and storing the program in a first memory location of the subscriber unit; determining whether the program was received correctly; and in response to a determination that the program was received correctly, storing the program in a second memory location of the wireless subscriber unit and rebooting the wireless subscriber unit and loading the program from the second memory location.

11 . The method of claim 10 wherein the program is received by a modem of the wireless subscriber unit.

12 . The method of claim 11 wherein the modem is a CDMA modem.

13 . The method of claim 10 wherein the first memory location is in a FLASH memory.

14 . The method of claim 10 comprising reprogramming the second memory location using the program stored in the first memory location.

15 . The method of claim 10 wherein the second memory location is in a FLASH memory.

16 . The method of claim 10 comprising receiving current values of system parameters by the wireless subscriber unit.

17 . The method of claim 16 wherein the current values are provided by modem.

18 . The method of claim 16 wherein the current values are system noise interference levels, number of established calls, forward power control parameters, reverse power control parameters, time to access a channel, time to establish a channel or a number of dropped calls.
