Abstract

A brake shoe assembly for a vehicle is provided. A brake shoe has at least one slot on its outer surface. A brake plate has a backing plate that includes at least one key. The brake plate is secured to the brake shoe via the key being received within the at least one slot in the brake shoe. is secured to the outer surface of the brake shoe. This provides a connection that resisting radial movement of the brake plate relative to the outer surface of the brake shoe. A plurality of additional fasteners is also provided for securing the brake plate to the brake shoe. A frictional brake lining is molded on the brake plate and includes cut out portions exposing corners of the brake plate. At least one of the corners of the brake plate defines a hole for receiving one of the fasteners.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 .- 16 . (canceled)

         17 . A brake shoe assembly comprising:
a brake shoe having an outer radial surface defining at least one slot; a brake plate secured to the outer radial surface of the brake shoe, the brake plate having a backing plate that includes at least one key received within the at least one slot of the brake shoe for resisting radial movement of the brake plate relative to the outer radial surface of the brake shoe; a plurality of fasteners for securing the brake plate to the brake shoe; and a frictional brake lining molded on the brake plate, the brake lining having cut out portions exposing corners of the brake plate, wherein each exposed corner of the brake plate defines a hole for receiving one of the fasteners for fastening the brake plate to the brake shoe.

18 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 17 , wherein the outer radial surface defines a central axis, wherein the at least one slot and the at least one key are axially elongated.

19 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 18 , wherein the at least one slot includes a pair of axially elongated slots and the at least one key includes a pair of axially elongated keys, wherein the pair of slots are axially aligned.

20 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 18 , wherein the brake plate further includes a preassembled fastener spaced from the at least one key and extending through a hole defined in the brake shoe for securing the brake plate to the brake shoe.

21 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 20 , wherein the preassembled fastener is axially aligned with one of the plurality of fasteners.

22 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 17 , wherein the at least one key is integrally formed as a part of the backing plate.

23 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 17 , wherein the at least one slot includes a plurality of slots extending circumferentially around at least a portion of the brake shoe.

24 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 17 , wherein the key passes only partially through the brake shoe.

         25 . A brake shoe assembly comprising:
a brake shoe having an outer surface defining at least one slot and a plurality of alignment holes; and a brake plate having a backing plate with an inner surface for engaging with the outer surface of the brake shoe, the brake plate having a frictional brake lining bonded with the backing plate, the backing plate including at least one key protruding inward toward to the brake shoe to mate with the at least one slot for resisting movement of the brake plate relative to the outer surface of the brake shoe, the backing plate further including a plurality of preassembled fasteners spaced from the at least one key and extending through the alignment holes in the outer surface of the brake shoe.

26 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 25 , wherein the frictional brake lining is molded to the backing plate to form a continuous molded layer that covers at least a portion of the preassembled fasteners.

27 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 26 , wherein the brake lining is free of holes extending completely through the continuous molded layer.

28 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 25 , wherein the at least one slot protrudes inward without passing completely through the brake shoe such that the at least one key does not pass completely through the brake shoe.

29 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 25 , wherein the backing plate includes corners that define (i) plate holes and (ii) portions of the backing plate where the backing plate is free from the frictional brake lining.

30 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 29 , wherein the outer surface of the brake shoe defines shoe holes aligned with the plate holes to enable fasteners to pass through the plate holes and shoe holes to secure the brake plate to the brake shoe.

31 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 25 , wherein the at least one key is at least one tang partially severed from the brake plate.

32 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 25 , wherein the outer surface of the brake shoe and the inner surface of the backing plate are of partial-cylindrical shape and define a central axis.

33 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 32 , wherein the at least one slot and the at least one key are axially elongated.

34 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 25 , wherein the inner surface of the backing plate is flat, and the outer surface of the brake shoe includes flat sections.

35 . The brake shoe assembly of claim 25 , wherein the at least one key and the at least one slot are cylindrical.
