Abstract

A method of enhancing picture quality of a video signal is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of generating an interpolated base frame image: receiving a first previously decoded difference picture; receding a second previously decoded difference picture; generating a combined motion compensated difference surface; and generating a temporally interpolated enhanced picture based upon the interpolated base frame image end the combined motion compensated difference surface. A circuit for enhancing picture quality of a video signal is also disclosed. The circuit comprises a base decoder generating a base image of a standard definition picture; a temporal predictive interpolator coupled to the base decoder and generating an interpolated block; and a summing circuit coupled to the temporal predictive interpolator. The summing circuit preferably adds the interpolated block and a difference block.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 6 . (canceled)

7 . Apparatus for processing a video signal comprising:
a motion compensation predictor operable to form a first enhancement layer block using motion vector information from a base layer; and, a summer, coupled to said motion compensation predictor operable to form a second enhancement layer block based on information related to said first enhancement layer block and difference information.

8 . The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said motion compensation predictor forms said first enhancement layer block by scaling information related to a base layer motion vector.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said motion compensation predictor forms said first enhancement layer block using motion enhancement layer information from a previously decoded picture.

10 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said motion compensation predictor forms said first enhancement layer block using motion enhancement layer information from two previously decoded pictures.

11 . A computer readable medium containing program instructions which when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform the steps of:
forming a first enhancement layer block by interpolating information related to a base layer block; forming a second enhancement layer block using motion vector information from a base layer; forming a third enhancement layer block based on information related to said first enhancement layer block and information related to said second enhancement layer block; and, displaying information related to said third enhancement layer block on a display.

12 . A computer readable medium containing program instructions which when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform the steps of:
forming a first enhancement layer block using motion vector information from a base layer; forming a second enhancement layer block that comprises difference information; forming a third enhancement layer block based on information related to said first enhancement layer block and information related to said second enhancement layer block; and, displaying information related to said third enhancement layer block on a display.
