Abstract

A closure is provided for use in covering a discharge opening in a container and engaging a peripheral rim defining the opening. The closure lid includes a body for covering the container opening and a plurality of projecting portions that extend from a periphery of the body. The projecting portions are spaced from one another, with each formed to surround a portion of the container rim. A ring is connected to the projecting portions and surrounds the container rim. A plurality of retaining fingers are provided, with each finger spaced from one another and interleaved within the spacing between adjacent projecting portions. The fingers project inwardly from the ring and engage the bead on the container rim. The engagement of the fingers with the container rim is visible through the spacing between the projecting portions.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A closure for use in covering a container, the container having a defined rim and an outwardly projecting bead thereon, the closure comprising:
a body adapted to engage the defined rim of a container; and a skirt frangibly connected to the body, the frangible connection of the skirt with the body formed at a position adjoining the engagement of the rim of the container, the skirt having
a plurality of projecting portions extending from a periphery of the body, the projecting portions spaced from one another around the periphery, each projecting portion adapted to surround a portion of the container rim and a corresponding portion of the bead,
a ring connected to the plurality of projecting portions, the ring adapted to surround container rim, and
a plurality of retaining fingers, the fingers spaced from one another and interleaved within the spacing between adjacent projecting portions, the fingers angling inwardly and upwardly from the ring and adapted to engage the bead associated with the container rim, wherein the engagement of the fingers with the bead is visible through the spacing between the projecting portions, and wherein the fingers are removed along with the ring upon frangible disconnection of the skirt from the body.

2 . A closure as in claim 1 wherein the projecting portions are formed for wrapping around at least an upper portion of the container rim and the bead.

3 . A closure as in claim 1 wherein the body comprises a base portion for extending across an opening in the container and a projecting sidewall formed for contacting with an internal sidewall of the container opening.

4 . A closure as in claim 3 further comprising a peripheral flange formed with and extending outwardly from the sidewall of the body.

5 . A closure as in claim 4 wherein the frangible connection of the body to the skirt is formed adjacent the flange.

6 . A closure as in claim 5 wherein the flange extends radially outwardly from the body and wherein the fingers project from the ring to a radial position inward of the radial extension of the flange.

7 . A closure as in claim 5 wherein the flange extends radially outwardly from the body to a position inwardly of the projection of the bead from the rim of a container.

8 . A closure as in claim 1 further comprising a plurality of stiffening ribs formed on the skirt, the ribs associated with a corresponding retaining finger, each rib connecting the finger with an adjacent portion of the skirt.

9 . A closure as in claim 8 wherein the connection by the rib is between the finger and the adjacent portion of the ring.

10 . A closure as in claim 1 wherein the skirt further comprised an opening tab extending from the flange, the opening tab remaining connected to the body, upon detachment of the projections and ring from the body.

11 . A closure as in claim 1 wherein the frangible connection of the body and the skirt is positioned radially outward of the radial projection of the bead on the rim of the container.

         12 . A package comprising
a container having a rim adjacent a container discharge, the rim defined by an outwardly projecting peripheral bead; and a closure for removably covering the discharge and engaging the rim on the container; the closure comprising
a body adapted to engage the rim of the container, the body having a peripheral flange formed for overlap with an upper portion of the container rim, and
a skirt frangibly connected to the flange, the frangible connection of the skirt with the flange formed at a position adjoining the rim of the container, the skirt having
a plurality of spaced projecting portions extending from the flange, each projecting portion adapted to surround a portion of the rim and a corresponding portion of the bead,
a ring connected to the plurality of projecting portions, the ring adapted to surround, in a spaced relationship with, the bead, and
a plurality of retaining fingers, the fingers interleaved with and positioned within the space between the projecting portions, the fingers angled inwardly and upwardly from the ring and adapted to engage the bead,

wherein the engagement of the fingers with the bead is visible through the spacing between the projecting portions, and wherein the fingers are removed along with the ring upon frangible disconnection of the skirt from the flange.

13 . A package as in claim 12 wherein the body comprises a base portion for extending across an opening in the container, the opening forming the container discharge, and a projecting sidewall formed for contacting with an internal sidewall of the container opening.

14 . A package as in claim 13 therein the peripheral flange extends outwardly from the sidewall.

15 . A package as in claim 12 further comprising a plurality of stiffening ribs formed on the skirt, the ribs associated with a corresponding retaining finger, the rib connecting the finger with an adjacent portion of the skirt.

16 . A package as in claim 15 wherein the connection by the rib is between the finger and the adjacent portion of the ring.

17 . A package as in claim 18 further comprising an opening tab extending from the flange and formed within a plane of the skirt.

18 . A package as in claim 12 wherein the flange extends radially outwardly from the body and wherein the fingers project from the ring to a radial position inward of the radial extension of the flange.

19 . A package as in claim 12 wherein the frangible connection of the body and the skirt is positioned radially outward of the radial projection of the bead on the rim of the container.
