Abstract

Mobile telecommunications apparatus has a receiver for receiving concurrently a plurality of broadcast services containing image data content, and a display device with a display area operable to display an image corresponding to the content of at least one of the services in a first mode in which the content one of the channels is displayed for normal viewing, and a second mode in which the content of more than one of the services is displayed. A mosaic of images may be displayed from which one may be selected for full screen viewing in the first mode. Also a picture-in-picture (PIP) display may be provided with a facility to swap between displayed images.

Claims

1 . A method comprising:
receiving, at a mobile telecommunications apparatus (UE), at least one of a plurality of broadcast services; enabling the apparatus(UE) to be operable in:
a first mode in which content corresponding to one of the services is displayed for normal viewing, and
a second mode in which content corresponding to more than one of the services is displayed; and in which content corresponding to one of the services is displayed at a higher quality than a quality of the display of the content corresponding to another of the services.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising allowing a user selection to be made from the services displayed in the second mode for normal viewing in the first mode.

3 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said higher quality display of the content one of the services comprises a video display and the display of the content for the another of the services comprises a still image or a succession thereof

4 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising, in the second mode, displaying different ones of the displayed services in said higher quality.

5 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising, in the second mode, displaying different ones of the displayed services in said higher quality, successively.

6 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising either:
sequentially selecting which service is to be displayed in said higher quality, or rotating selection from the displayed services of which service is to be displayed in said higher quality.

7 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising receiving a user input to select which service is to be displayed in said higher quality.

8 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising receiving a user input to select a number of services that are to have their content displayed in the second mode.

9 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising receiving a user input to select which services are to have their content displayed in the second mode.

10 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising displaying, in the second mode, the content of the services in a mosaic of image tiles corresponding to the content of the services.

11 . The method according to claim 10 , wherein the image tiles are of equal size.

12 . The method according to claim 10 , wherein the image tiles are configured so that one is larger than another.

13 . The method according to claim 12 , wherein the larger tile displays an image of higher quality than the another.

14 . The method according to claim 10 , further comprising receiving a user input to change the size and/or location of a selected one of the tiles.

15 . The method according to claim 10 , wherein at least one of the tiles either:
overlaps the or each other one thereof, or abut one another.

         16 . An apparatus comprising:
a mobile telecommunications apparatus (UE), the UE receiving at least one of a plurality of broadcast services, the UE being operable in:
a first mode in which content corresponding to one of the services is displayed for normal viewing, and
a second mode in which content corresponding to more than one of the services is displayed; and in which content corresponding to one of the services is displayed at a higher quality than a quality of the display of the content corresponding to another of the services.

17 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the UE is operable to allow a user selection to be made from the services displayed in the second mode for normal viewing in the first mode.

18 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein said higher quality display of the content one of the services comprises a video display and the display of the content for the another of the services comprises a still image or a succession thereof

19 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the UE is operable, in the second mode, to display different ones of the displayed services in said higher quality.

20 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the UE is operable, in the second mode, to display different ones of the displayed services in said higher quality, successively.

21 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the UE is operable to either:
sequentially select which service is to be displayed in said higher quality, or rotate selection from the displayed services of which service is to be displayed in said higher quality.

22 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the UE is operable to receive a user input to select which service is to be displayed in said higher quality.

23 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the UE is operable to receive a user input to select a number of services that are to have their content displayed in the second mode.

24 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the UE is operable to receive a user input to select which services are to have their content displayed in the second mode.

25 . The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the UE is operable to display, in the second mode, the content of the services in a mosaic of image tiles corresponding to the content of the services.

26 . The apparatus according to claim 25 , wherein the image tiles are of equal size.

27 . The apparatus according to claim 25 , wherein the image tiles are configured so that one is larger than another.
