Pillow having a concealed tray

Abstract

The invention generally pertains to a pillow convertible between an open position as a food and beverage holder and a closed position as a pillow. By way of example, the pillow has a first and second pillow portion that may be coupled and uncoupled to switch between a closed position and an open position. The pillow also has a food surface member with one or more beverage holders that is sized to fit within the interior of the pillow in the closed position. In another example, the food surface member is a two-piece construction with a slidable tray lock that moves between a first position when the pillow is closed and a second position that secures the two pieces together as a substantially coplanar surface when the pillow is open. In yet another example, the beverage holder is tapered so as to fit a variety of sizes of beverage containers.

         24 . A convertible pillow having a closed position as a pillow and an open position as a tray surface, the pillow comprising:
 a pillow member having a cushion material for a user to rest on in the closed position as a pillow; and   a two-piece tray comprising a first tray piece and a second tray piece, at least one edge of the first tray piece abutting at least one edge of the second tray piece forming a substantially planar surface for placing items thereon in the open position, the first tray piece and the second tray piece enclosed within the pillow member and substantially surrounded by the cushion material in the closed position.   
     
     
         25 . The convertible pillow of  claim 24 , further comprising a first handle coupled to the first tray piece and a second handle coupled to the second tray piece, the first and second handles configured for carrying the convertible pillow by the user in the open position as a tray surface. 
     
     
         26 . The convertible pillow of  claim 24 , wherein the tray surface is supported by the cushion material of the pillow member in the open position. 
     
     
         27 . The convertible pillow of  claim 24 , further comprising a modular frame having a first modular base portion and a second modular base portion each coupled to the pillow, wherein said first tray piece is secured to the first modular base portion and the second tray piece is secured to the second modular base portion.

The convertible pillow of  claim 24 , wherein the first tray piece is removably secured to a first pillow portion of the pillow member using at least one surface member holding means and the second tray piece is removably secured to a second pillow portion of the pillow member using at least one surface member holding means. 
     
     
         29 . The convertible pillow of  claim 24 , wherein the first tray piece and the second tray piece each comprise a non-skid textured surface. 
     
     
         30 . The convertible pillow of  claim 24 , further comprising at least one beverage holder disposed within the two-piece tray and configured to securely receive different sizes of beverage containers. 
     
     
         31 . A convertible pillow having a closed position as a pillow and an open position as a tray surface, the pillow comprising:
 a pillow member having a cushion material for a user to rest on in the closed position as a pillow; and   a two-piece tray comprising a first tray piece and a second tray piece, at least one edge of the first tray piece adjacent to at least one edge of the second tray piece forming a substantially planar surface for placing items thereon in the open position, the first tray piece and the second tray piece enclosed within the pillow member and substantially surrounded by the cushion material in the closed position.   
     
     
         32 . The convertible pillow of  claim 31 , further comprising a first handle coupled to the first tray piece and a second handle coupled to the second tray piece, the first and second handles configured for carrying the convertible pillow by the user in the open position as a tray surface. 
     
     
         33 . The convertible pillow of  claim 31 , wherein the tray surface is supported by the cushion material of the pillow member in the open position. 
     
     
         34 . The convertible pillow of  claim 31 , further comprising a modular frame having a first modular base portion and a second modular base portion each coupled to the pillow, wherein said first tray piece is secured to the first modular base portion and the second tray piece is secured to the second modular base portion. 
     
     
         35 . The convertible pillow of  claim 31 , wherein the first tray piece is removably secured to a first pillow portion of the pillow member using at least one surface member holding means and the second tray piece is removably secured to a second pillow portion of the pillow member using at least one surface member holding means. 
     
     
         36 . The convertible pillow of  claim 31 , wherein the first tray piece and the second tray piece each comprise a non-skid textured surface. 
     
     
         37 . The convertible pillow of  claim 31 , further comprising at least one beverage holder disposed within the two-piece tray and configured to securely receive different sizes of beverage containers. 
     
     
         38 . A convertible pillow having a closed position as a pillow and an open position as a tray surface, the pillow comprising:
 a pillow member having a cushion material for a user to rest on in the closed position as a pillow; and   a two-piece tray comprising a first tray piece and a second tray piece, at least one edge of the first tray piece adjacent to at least one edge of the second tray piece forming a substantially planar surface for placing items thereon in the open position, the tray surface supported by the cushion material of the pillow member in the open position, the first tray piece and the second tray piece enclosed within the pillow member and substantially surrounded by the cushion material in the closed position.   
     
     
         39 . The convertible pillow of  claim 38 , further comprising a first handle coupled to the first tray piece and a second handle coupled to the second tray piece, the first and second handles configured for carrying the convertible pillow by the user in the open position as a tray surface. 
     
     
         40 . The convertible pillow of  claim 38 , further comprising a modular frame having a first modular base portion and a second modular base portion each coupled to the pillow, wherein said first tray piece is secured to the first modular base portion and the second tray piece is secured to the second modular base portion.

The convertible pillow of  claim 38 , wherein the first tray piece is removably secured to a first pillow portion of the pillow member using at least one surface member holding means and the second tray piece is removably secured to a second pillow portion of the pillow member using at least one surface member holding means. 
     
     
         42 . The convertible pillow of  claim 38 , wherein the first tray piece and the second tray piece each comprise a non-skid textured surface.
