System and method for providing supplemental content related to printed content in a printed publication

Abstract

A system for providing supplemental content, e.g. purchase information and/or URLs, to a user includes a server and client computing platforms. The supplemental content is related to printed content from a printed publication, such as a magazine. A specific set of printed content, such as a page in a magazine, may include multiple content items that may be of particular interest to the user. The user requests the supplemental content regarding a specific content item by selecting a user-selectable field, e.g. presented via a display of a client computing platform, that corresponds to the specific content item.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A system configured to provide to a user supplemental content related to printed content in a printed publication, the system comprising:
 an electronic display; and   one or more physical processors configured to execute computer program modules, the computer program modules comprising:
 an identifier transmission module configured to transmit an itemized content request to a server, wherein the itemized content request identifies printed content in a printed publication, wherein the printed content includes multiple content items; 
 a representation module configured to obtain itemized representation content, wherein the itemized representation content includes user-selectable fields, wherein individual user-selectable fields correspond to individual content items of the printed content, wherein individual user-selectable fields are associated with supplemental content; 
 a customization module configured to customize the itemized representation content according to user-specific customization settings; 
 an interface module configured to present the customized itemized representation content on the electronic display, wherein the interface module is configured to receive a selection of a user-selectable field; 
 a supplemental request module configured to, responsive to receipt of the selection, transmit a supplemental content request that identifies the received selection; and 
 a presentation module configured to obtain supplemental content associated with the selection, wherein the presentation module is configured to present the supplemental content on the electronic display. 
   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the printed content comprises an individual page in the printed publication. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the customization module is configured to customize the itemized representation content dynamically such that, responsive to transmission of the itemized content request to the server at a first moment in time, the itemized representation content includes a first set of user-selectable fields, and further such that, responsive to transmission of the itemized content request to the server at a later moment in time occurring after the first moment in time, the itemized representation content includes a second set of user-selectable fields, the second set of user-selectable fields being different than the first set of user-selectable fields. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the itemized representation content is configured as a graphical representation of the printed content. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the representation module is configured such that obtaining the itemized representation content includes receiving transmission of the itemized representation content. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the user-selectable fields include at least one of an image, text, a barcode, audio information, and video information. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the customization module is configured to customize the itemized representation content based on one or more user-preferred stores and/or one or more user-preferred brands. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the user-selectable field corresponds to an internet location, and wherein the representation module is configured to obtain the supplemental content from the internet location. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the interface module is configured to present the customized itemized representation content such that one or more items in the itemized representation content are not presented on the electronic display 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the supplemental content is curated by a supplemental network, and wherein selection of the user-selectable field transfers identification information that identifies one or both of the user and/or the system to the supplemental network. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the supplemental content is curated by a supplemental network, wherein the itemized representation content is curated by a proprietary network, and wherein selection of the user-selectable field transfers identification information that identifies the proprietary network to the supplemental network. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the printed content represents at least one of an informational article and an advertisement for a commercial good or service. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 1 , further comprising an interaction module configured to receive promotional information, wherein the presentation module is further configured to present the promotional information on the electronic display. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the promotional information is user-specific. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein association of the selected user-selectable field with the supplemental content is curated by a third-party network. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the association of the selected user-selectable field with the supplemental content is dynamically adjustable by the third-party network such that, responsive to receipt of the selection of the user-selectable field at a first moment in time, the associated supplemental content includes a first item of supplemental content, and further such that, responsive to receipt of the selection of the user-selectable field at a later moment in time occurring after the first moment in time, the associated supplemental content includes a second item of supplemental content, wherein the second item of supplemental content is different than the first item of supplemental content. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the itemized content request includes at least one of an image, a machine readable marker, and a user supplied identifier. 
     
     
         18 . A system configured to provide, to a user, supplemental content related to printed content in a printed publication, the system comprising:
 one or more physical processors configured to execute computer program modules, the computer program modules comprising:
 an identifier reception module configured to obtain an itemized content request that identifies printed content in a printed publication, wherein the printed content includes multiple content items, wherein the identifier reception module is further configured to identify the printed content in the printed publication that corresponds to the itemized content request; and 
 a content access module configured to provide access to itemized representation content, wherein the itemized representation content includes user-selectable fields, wherein individual user-selectable fields correspond to individual content items, wherein a user-selectable field is associated with supplemental content that is related to a corresponding content item, and wherein the content access module is further configured to provide access to the associated supplemental content. 
   
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein association of the user-selectable field with the supplemental content is dynamic such that, responsive to obtainment of the itemized content request at a first moment in time, the supplemental content includes a first item of supplemental content, and further such that, responsive to obtainment of the itemized content request at a later moment in time occurring after the first moment in time, the supplemental content includes a second item of supplemental content, wherein the second item of supplemental content is different than the first item of supplemental content. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 18 , further comprising a promotional module configured to transmit promotional information to a client computing platform, wherein the promotional information includes at least one of a text message, an audio message, a video message, an invitation, a commercial ad, and a coupon. 
     
     
         21 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the printed content includes an informational article that includes text, and wherein at least a portion of the text of the informational article does not correspond to any individual user-selectable fields included in the itemized representation content. 
     
     
         22 . A method for providing supplemental content related to printed content in a printed publication to a user, the method being implemented in a computer system that includes an electronic display and one or more physical processors, the method comprising:
 transmitting an itemized content request to a server, wherein the itemized content request identifies printed content in a printed publication, wherein the printed content includes multiple content items;   obtaining itemized representation content, responsive to transmission of the itemized content request, wherein the itemized representation content includes user-selectable fields, wherein individual user-selectable fields correspond to individual content items of the printed content, and wherein individual user-selectable fields are associated with supplemental content;   customizing, by one or more physical processors, the itemized representation content according to user-specific customization settings;   presenting the customized itemized representation content on the electronic display;   receiving a selection of a user-selectable field;   transmitting, responsive to receipt of the selection, a supplemental content request that identifies the received selection;   receiving supplemental content associated with the selection; and   presenting, on the electronic display, the supplemental content.   
     
     
         23 . A method for providing supplemental content related to printed content in a printed publication to a user, the method being implemented in a computer system that includes an electronic display and one or more physical processors, the method comprising:
 obtaining an itemized content request that identifies printed content in a printed publication, wherein the printed content includes multiple content items;   identifying the printed content in the printed publication that corresponds to the itemized content request;   providing access to itemized representation content, wherein the itemized representation content includes user-selectable fields, wherein individual user-selectable fields correspond to individual content items, wherein a user-selectable field is associated with supplemental content that is related to a corresponding content item; and   providing access to the associated supplemental content.

The method of  claim 23 , wherein association of the user-selectable field with the supplemental content is dynamic such that, responsive to obtaining the itemized content request at a first moment in time, the supplemental content includes a first item of supplemental content, and further such that, responsive to obtaining the itemized content request at a later moment in time occurring after the first moment in time, the supplemental content includes a second item of supplemental content, wherein the second item of supplemental content is different than the first item of supplemental content. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 23 , wherein the printed content includes an informational article that includes text, and wherein at least a portion of the text of the informational article does not correspond to any individual user-selectable fields included in the itemized representation content.
