Abstract
An adjustable light for a medical environment comprises a first housing adapted for engagement with a handle of an overhead light, a second housing including a lamp operatively connected to a power source for generating illuminating light, and a flexible shaft extending between and interconnecting the first housing at a proximal end of the shaft and the second housing at a distal end of the shaft. The first housing is adapted to be releasably coupled to the handle of the overhead light over a work area such that the flexible arm and the second housing are selectively movable relative to the first housing toward a target in the work area for illuminating the target.

1 . An adjustable light for a medical environment including an overhead light having a light handle, the adjustable light comprising:
a first housing adapted for engagement with the handle of the overhead light; a second housing including a lamp operatively connected to a power source for generating illuminating light; and a flexible shaft extending between and interconnecting the first housing at a proximal end of the shaft and the second housing at a distal end of the shaft,
wherein the first housing is adapted to be releasably coupled to the handle of the overhead light over a work area such that the flexible arm and the second housing are selectively movable relative to the first housing toward a target in the work area for illuminating the target.
2 . The adjustable light as recited in claim 1 , wherein the power source is an external power source, and the first housing comprises an outlet means for connecting the first housing to the power source.
3 . The adjustable light as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a threaded connector on the first housing, the threaded connector adapted to threadably engage the handle of the overhead light.
4 . The adjustable light as recited in claim 1 , wherein the power source is an A.C. power source.
5 . The adjustable light as recited in claim 1 , wherein the lamp comprises an LED.
6 . The adjustable light as recited in claim 1 , wherein the lamp comprises an incandescent bulb, a lens, and a reflector.
7 . The adjustable light as recited in claim 1 , wherein the power source comprises batteries disposed in the first housing.
8 . The adjustable light as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first housing comprises a rechargeable electrical power source.
9 . The adjustable light as recited in claim 7 , further comprising a conducting element extending from the first housing through flexible shaft to the second housing for delivering power from the first housing to the second housing.
10 . A lighting system for a medical environment including a ceiling, the lighting system comprising:
an overhead light adapted to be suspended from the ceiling, the overhead light including a handle; a first housing configured for engagement with the handle of the overhead light; a second housing including a lamp operatively connected to a power source for generating illuminating light; and a flexible shaft extending between and interconnecting the first housing at a proximal end of the shaft and the second housing at a distal end of the shaft,
wherein the first housing is releasably coupled to the overhead light over a work area such that the flexible arm and the second housing are selectively movable relative to the first housing toward a target in the work area for illuminating the target.
11 . The lighting system as recited in claim 10 , further comprising a threaded connector on the first housing, and a threaded connector on the handle of the overhead light, wherein the threaded connectors are configured to threadably engage for connecting the first housing to the handle of the overhead light.
12 . The lighting system as recited in claim 10 , further comprising an attachment mechanism for releasably attaching the first housing to the overhead light, and a mating attachment on the overhead light to facilitate detachably connecting the first housing to the overhead light.
13 . The lighting system as recited in claim 12 , wherein the first hosing defines a cavity, wherein the handle is received into the cavity of first housing for providing a selectively disengageable connection between the first housing and the overhead light.
14 . The lighting system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the first opening defines an opening into the cavity, and further comprising a cam pivotally attached to the housing adjacent the opening, the cam spaced out of the opening in a first position and extending through the opening into the cavity in a second position for engaging the handle.
15 . The lighting system as recited in claim 10 , further comprising a conducting element extending from the first housing through flexible shaft to the second housing for delivering power from the first housing to the second housing.
16 . The lighting system as recited in claim 10 , further comprising means operatively associated with the second housing for using the power source.
