Golf club apparatus and method

Abstract

A golf club apparatus includes a shaft, a grip and a head. The head is attached to the shaft. The head further includes a main body having a ball contacting surface or club face; a heel portion, a toe portion and a sole portion. The shaft attached to the main body proximate the heel portion and the toe portion is distal from an attachment point of the shaft. The sole portion corresponds to the bottom of the main body and is positioned between the toe portion and the heel portion and the leading edge to the trailing edge. A leading edge is an edge formed at the intersection of the club face and the sole portion. The sole portion has a plurality of substantially triangularly shaped or v-shaped grooves therein with axes. Each of the axes is between 0 degrees and 180 degrees to the plane of the club face. This angle is also combined with varying levels of bounce, camber, radius and sole width creating various options within a certain degree of a wedge or iron.

What is claimed: 
     
         1 . A golf club apparatus comprising:
 a shaft; and   a head attached to the shaft, the head further comprising a main body including;
 a ball contacting surface; 
 a heel portion, the shaft attaches to the main body proximate the heel portion; 
 a toe portion distal from an attachment point of the shaft; and 
 a sole portion forming the bottom of the main body and positioned between the toe portion and the heel portion, the sole portion having a plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves, 
 wherein each alternating plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves are substantially parallel to one another. 
   
     
     
         2 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein an odd numbered plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves are all parallel to one another. 
     
     
         3 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 2 , wherein the odd numbered plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves are substantially perpendicular to the leading edge. 
     
     
         4 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 2 , wherein an even numbered plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves are all parallel to one another. 
     
     
         5 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 3 , wherein the even numbered plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves are offset from the leading edge of the golf club head by an offset angle alpha. 
     
     
         6 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 5 , wherein the offset angle alpha is between 58 to 81 degrees. 
     
     
         7 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 6 , wherein the offset angle alpha is between 65 to 70 degrees. 
     
     
         8 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 7 , wherein the offset angle alpha is about 64 degrees. 
     
     
         9 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves extend across the sole but do not intersect the ball contacting surface. 
     
     
         10 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the angle of the axis with respect to the ball contacting surface changes with the length of the club. 
     
     
         11 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 1 , wherein the angle of the axis with respect to the ball contacting surface changes with the swing path of the golf club. 
     
     
         12 . A golf club apparatus comprising:
 a shaft; and   a head attached to the shaft, the head further comprising a main body including;
 a ball contacting surface; 
 a heel portion, the shaft attaches to the main body proximate the heel portion; 
 a toe portion distal from an attachment point of the shaft; and 
 a sole portion forming the bottom of the main body and positioned between the toe portion and the heel portion, the sole portion having a plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves, 
 wherein the plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves further comprises; 
 a first plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves all placed at a first offset angle and substantially parallel to one another; and 
 a second plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves all placed at a second offset angle and substantially parallel to one another; 
 wherein a placement of the second plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves is juxtaposed between each of the plurality of first plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves; 
   wherein the first offset angle and the second offset angle are different.   
     
     
         13 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 12 , wherein the first plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves and the second plurality of substantially triangular shaped grooves intersect near a rear portion of the sole portion. 
     
     
         14 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 13 , wherein the first offset angle is about 90 degrees. 
     
     
         15 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 14 , wherein the second offset angle is between 58 to 81 degrees. 
     
     
         16 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 15 , wherein the offset angle alpha is between 65 to 70 degrees. 
     
     
         17 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 16 , wherein the offset angle alpha is about 64 degrees. 
     
     
         18 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 12 , wherein the angle of the axis with respect to the ball contacting surface changes with the length of the club. 
     
     
         19 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 12 , wherein the angle of the axis with respect to the ball contacting surface changes with the swing path of the golf club. 
     
     
         20 . The golf club apparatus of  claim 12 , wherein the substantially triangular shaped grooves extend across the sole but do not intersect the club face.
