Abstract

Disclosed herein are polyurethane polymer matrices with a porosity of from about 20 microns to about 90 microns that are useful in promoting closure and protection of incision sites; supporting the lower pole position of breast implants; and providing a partial or complete covering of breast implants to provide a beneficial interface with host tissue and to reduce the potential for malpositioning or capsular contracture. The disclosed matrices can be seeded with mammalian cells.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A medical implant comprising:
a breast prosthesis; and a covering on said breast prosthesis, the covering comprising silk; the covering providing a beneficial interface between the breast prosthesis and host tissue and reducing the potential for malpositioning or capsular contracture.

2 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the covering is a partial covering on said breast prosthesis.

3 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the covering is a complete covering of said breast prosthesis.

4 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the covering consists essentially of silk.

5 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the covering is a wrap like configuration.

6 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the breast prosthesis is a silicone or saline filled breast prosthesis.

7 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the silk is woven.

8 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the silk is a spun fiber.

9 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the covering is porous.

10 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the covering is porous and has a pore size diameter of from about 10 to about 1000 microns.

11 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the covering is porous and has a pore size diameter of from about 20 to about 90 microns.

12 . A medical implant useful for reconstruction or augmentation, the implant comprising:
a fluid-filled prosthesis; and a covering on said prosthesis, the covering comprising silk; the covering providing a beneficial interface between the prosthesis and host tissue.

13 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the covering is a partial covering on said prosthesis.

14 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the covering is a complete covering of said prosthesis.

15 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the covering consists essentially of silk.

16 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the covering is a wrap like configuration.

17 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the prosthesis is a silicone or saline filled prosthesis.

18 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the silk is woven.

19 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the silk is a spun fiber.

20 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the covering is porous.

21 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the covering is porous and has a pore size diameter of from about 10 to about 1000 microns.

22 . The implant of claim 12 wherein the covering is porous and has a pore size diameter of from about 20 to about 90 microns.

         23 . A breast implant comprising:
a saline or silicone filled breast prosthesis; and a covering on said breast prosthesis in a wrap like configuration, the covering comprising woven silk; the covering providing a beneficial interface between the breast prosthesis and host tissue and reducing the potential for malpositioning or capsular contracture; the covering being porous and having a pore size diameter of from about 10 to about 1000 microns.

24 . The implant of claim 23 wherein the covering has a pore size diameter of from about 20 to about 90 microns.
