Abstract

The disclosed embodiments relate to a system and method for analyzing data. An exemplary method comprises the acts of receiving data corresponding to at least one time series, and computing a plurality of sequential instability index values of the data. An exemplary system comprises a source of data indicative of at least one time series of data, and a processor that is adapted to compute at least one of a plurality of sequential instability index values of the data.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A system for detecting the occurrence of events from a signal, comprising a processor programmed for:
 detecting variations of the signal;   detecting a baseline change in the signal, and   analyzing the baseline change and the signal variations to detect an occurrence of an event.   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the signal is a value indicative of the SPO2. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the variations of the signal are indicative, at least in part, of clustered variations of the signal. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the event is a baseline gradient. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the event is a baseline gradient between an awake state and a sleep state. 
     
     
         6 . A system for detecting the occurrence of events from a SPO2 or CO2 signal, comprising:
 a signal generator capable of generating the signal; and a processor capable of:
 detecting variations of the signal; 
 detecting a baseline change in the first signal; and 
 analyzing the baseline change and the at least one signal variation characteristic to detect an occurrence of an event. 
   
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein the signal is a value indicative of the SPO2. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein the variations of the signal are comprised, at least in part of clustered or cyclic variations of the signal. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein the event is a baseline gradient. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein the event is a baseline gradient between an awake state and a sleep state. 
     
     
         11 . Computer-readable medium for use in detecting the occurrence of events from a signal, the computer-readable medium having computer program instructions recorded thereon for:
 detecting variations of the signal;   detecting a baseline change in the signal, and   analyzing the baseline change and the signal variations to detect an occurrence of an event.   
     
     
         12 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 11 , wherein the signal is a value indicative of the SPO2. 
     
     
         13 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 11 , wherein the variations of the signal are comprised, at least in part of clustered or cyclic variations of the signal. 
     
     
         14 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 11 , wherein the event is a baseline gradient. 
     
     
         15 . An processing system for detecting the occurrence of a SPO2 or CO2 baseline gradient, comprising:
 a signal generator capable of generating at least one of a SPO2 or CO2 signal; and
 a processor programmed to: 
 search for clustered or cyclic variations of SPO2 or CO2 in the signal; 
 detect at least first and a second portion of the signal wherein the clustered or cycling variations are minimal or absent; and 
 determine the baseline gradient between the first and the second portions; and 
 output an indication of the gradient. 
   
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 15  wherein the first and second portions have durations of range of about 5 seconds to 15 minutes. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 15  wherein the processor is programmed to detect the occurrence of a baseline gradient which precedes the occurrence of clustered or cycling variations. 
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 15  wherein the processor is programmed to provide at least one of; a graded auditory or visual alarm indicative of the gradient, an indication the most likely type or combination of types of disordered breathing associated with the gradient, the therapy most likely to be effective, and adjustment of treatment in response to the detected gradient. 
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 15  wherein the gradient is calculated as a mathematical difference between a first value defining the first portion and a corresponding second value defining the second portion. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 15  wherein the first portion is detected during wakefulness and the second value is detected during a non-wake state. 
     
     
         21 . A system for detecting the occurrence of a baseline gradient of a signal, comprising a processor programmed for:
 calculating at least one signal characteristic of the signal;   detecting a baseline change in the signal;   detecting at least one signal characteristic of the signal;   detecting at least a first and a second portion of the signal, wherein the baseline change has occurred between the first and the second portions of the signal during an interval wherein the at least one signal characteristic is minimal or absent; and   outputting an indication of the baseline change.   
     
     
         22 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein the signal is a value indicative of the SPO2. 
     
     
         23 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one signal characteristic comprises clustered or cyclic variations of the signal. 
     
     
         24 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein the baseline change is determined by subtraction. 
     
     
         25 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein the event is a baseline gradient between an awake state and a sleep state. 
     
     
         26 . A system for detecting the occurrence of events from a signal, comprising:
 a signal generator capable of generating the signal; and a processor capable of:
 detecting a baseline change in the signal; 
 analyzing the baseline change to determine the presence or absence of rapid variations of the signal; 
 calculating the baseline gradient during the baseline change when the baseline is relatively free of rapid variations; and 
 outputting an indication of the baseline gradient. 
   
     
     
         27 . The system of  claim 26 , wherein the signal is a value indicative of the SPO2. 
     
     
         28 . The system of  claim 26 , wherein the rapid variations comprise clustered or cyclic variations of the signal. 
     
     
         29 . The system of  claim 26 , wherein the event is a baseline gradient. 
     
     
         30 . The system of  claim 26 , wherein the event is a baseline gradient between an awake state and a sleep state. 
     
     
         31 . A system for calculating the baseline gradient of an SPO2 or CO2 signal comprising a processor programmed for:
 detecting clustered variations of the signal;   detecting a baseline change in the signal during an interval with minimal or no clustered variations, and   calculating the baseline gradient during said interval.   
     
     
         32 . The system of  claim 31 , further comprising outputting the baseline gradient. 
     
     
         33 . The system of  claim 31 , wherein the baseline gradient is calculated using subtraction.
