Claims

Abstract

Disclosed herein are ophthalmic cleaning systems and methods for their use, which comprise an ophthalmic solution and lens case, wherein the solution includes dual disinfectants and the lens case includes silver. When the lens case is combined with the solution according to the system of the present invention, it surprisingly exhibits synergistic activity which results in a faster antimicrobial activity.

1 . A method of disinfecting a contact lens comprising contacting a contact lens with a solution in a silver-releasing contact lens case, wherein the solution comprises:
 about 0.00001% to about 0.01 w % (w/v) of a biguanide selected from the group consisting of alexidine and polyhexamethylene biguanide; and   about 0.000075% to about 0.01 wt % (w/v) polyquaternium-1; and   about 0.2% to about 1.5% (w/v) sodium chloride;   and further wherein in the method provides synergistic antimicrobial activity against at least one gram-negative bacterium.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the biguanide is alexidine. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the biguanide is polyhexamethylene biguanide. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the solution further comprises a chelating agent. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein the chelating agent is ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.

         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the solution further comprises a nonionic surfactant. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the lens case releases from about 1 ug/L to about 1000 ug/L of silver ions into the solution.
