Abstract

A method of positioning a femoral prosthesis relative to a femur. The method includes forming a first curved surface on a first condyle of the femur, and securing the femoral prosthesis to the femur such that a first curved bone-engaging surface of the femoral prosthesis mates with the first curved surface formed on the femur.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of positioning a femoral prosthesis relative to a femur comprising:
 forming a first curved surface on a first condyle of the femur; and   securing the femoral prosthesis to the femur such that a first curved bone-engaging surface of the femoral prosthesis mates with the first curved surface formed on the femur.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising forming a second curved surface on a second condyle of the femur, and forming a planar surface on the femur. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , further comprising securing the femoral prosthesis to the femur such that a second curved bone-engaging surface of the femoral prosthesis mates with the second curved surface formed on the second condyle, and such that the femoral prosthesis mates with the planar surface. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising forming a first bone hole in the femur and securing the femoral prosthesis to the femur such that a first projection of the femoral prosthesis is seated within the first bone hole. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , further comprising forming a second bone hole in the femur and securing the femoral prosthesis to the femur such that a second projection of the femoral prosthesis is seated within the second bone hole. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein the first projection is at the first curved bone-engaging surface of the femoral prosthesis. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising forming the first curved surface with a mill. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising forming the planar surface with a cutting guide block. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising forming the planar surface with a cutting guide block slidably mounted to a rail mounted to the femur. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  1 , further comprising forming an incision in a dermis relative to a knee joint of about 2 cm to about 8 cm. 
     
     
         11 . A method of positioning a femoral prosthesis relative to a femur in an anatomy, comprising:
 forming a first curved surface on a first portion of the femur;   forming a planar surface on the femur; and   positioning the femoral prosthesis to mate with both the first curved surface and the planar surface.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , further comprising:
 forming a second curved surface on a second portion of the femur.   
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein forming the first curved surface includes milling a first femoral condyle and forming the second curved surface includes milling a second femoral condyle. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 11 , further comprising forming an incision in a dermis relative to a knee joint of about 2 cm to about 8 cm. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 12 , further comprising:
 determining a first position of a first mill guide and positioning the first mill guide in the first position;   determining a second position of a second mill guide and positioning the second mill guide in the second position;   forming the first curved surface with a mill using the first mill guide; and   forming the second curved surface with the mill using the second mill guide.   
     
     
         16 . A method of positioning a femoral prosthesis relative to a femur in an anatomy comprising:
 forming a first bone hole in a first condyle of the femur;   mounting a guide track to the femur at the first bone hole;   forming a planar surface on the femur using a cutting guide block slidably mounted to the guide track;   forming a first curved surface on the first condyle; and   securing the femoral prosthesis to the femur such that a first curved bone-engaging surface of the femur mates with the first curved surface formed on the first condyle.   
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16 , further comprising forming the first curved surface with a mill. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , further comprising guiding the mill using a mill guide seated within the first bone hole. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 16 , further comprising cutting a second condyle of the femoral bone using a guide mounted to the first bone hole formed in the first condyle. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 16 , further comprising forming a second bone hole in a second condyle of the femur;
 mounting the guide track to the femur at the second bone hole;   forming a second curved surface on the second condyle; and   securing the femoral prosthesis to the femur such that a second curved bone-engaging surface of the femoral prosthesis mates with the second curved surface formed in the second condyle.
