Head guard

Abstract

A head guard is provided which has a fabric layer and a padding layer. The head guard is stretchable between a relaxed configuration and an expanded configuration. The expanding configuration has a convex shape such that it can conform to a head of a wearer. The head guard can be worn by a wearer in combination with a helmet.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A garment, comprising:
 a pair of sleeves;   a body portion; and   a hood extending from the body portion, wherein the hood comprises a multi-layered sidewall, the multi-layered sidewall comprising:
 an inner fabric layer and an outer fabric layer, the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer cooperating to define a pocket; and 
 a padding layer positioned within the pocket, the padding layer being disconnected from each of the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer, the padding layer comprising a rate dependent material. 
   
     
     
         2 . The garment of  claim 1 , wherein the multi-layered sidewall has an edge that at least partially defines a front-facing opening in the hood. 
     
     
         3 . The garment of  claim 2 , further comprising a drawstring positioned proximate the edge of the multi-layered sidewall and generally parallel to an edge of the padding layer. 
     
     
         4 . The garment of  claim 2 , wherein the hood comprises a conduit defined by a hem of the multi-layered sidewall, wherein the drawstring is positioned in the conduit. 
     
     
         5 . The garment of  claim 1 , wherein the hood further comprises:
 a forehead wall coupled to the multi-layered sidewall, the forehead wall comprising:
 an inner forehead wall fabric layer and an outer forehead wall fabric layer, the inner forehead wall fabric layer and the outer forehead wall fabric layer cooperating to define a forehead wall pocket; and 
 a forehead wall padding layer positioned within the forehead wall pocket, the forehead wall padding layer being disconnected from each of the inner forehead wall fabric layer and the outer forehead wall fabric layer, the forehead wall padding layer comprising a rate dependent material. 
   
     
     
         6 . The garment of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 a first drawstring comprising first and second end portions; and   a second drawstring comprising third and fourth end portions.   
     
     
         7 . The garment of  claim 6 , wherein the multi-layered sidewall and the forehead wall collectively define at least part of a front-facing opening of the hood, wherein the first drawstring string is positioned proximate to the front-facing opening of the hood. 
     
     
         8 . The garment of  claim 7 , wherein the second drawstring string extends from a first side of the front-facing opening around a rear portion of the hood and to a second side of the front-facing opening. 
     
     
         9 . The garment of  claim 8 , wherein drawing the first and second end portions closes the front-facing opening of the hood and drawing the third and fourth end portions tightens the multi-layered sidewall against a head of a wearer. 
     
     
         10 . The garment of  claim 1 , wherein the hood is formed from a plurality of multi-layered sidewalls. 
     
     
         11 . The garment of  claim 1 , wherein the garment is selected from the group consisting of a sweatshirt and a coat. 
     
     
         12 . The garment of  claim 11 , further comprising a zipper coupled the body portion. 
     
     
         13 . A garment, comprising:
 a pair of sleeves;   a body portion; and   a hood extending from the body portion, wherein the hood comprises a first multi-layered sidewall and a second multi-layered sidewall, wherein each of the first and second multi-layered sidewall comprises:
 an inner fabric layer and an outer fabric layer, the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer cooperating to define a pocket; and 
 a padding layer positioned within the pocket, the padding layer being disconnected from each of the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer, the padding layer comprising a rate dependent material. 
   
     
     
         14 . The garment of  claim 13 , wherein the hood further comprises:
 a forehead wall coupled to the first and second multi-layered sidewalls, the forehead wall comprising:
 an inner forehead wall fabric layer and an outer forehead wall fabric layer, the inner forehead wall fabric layer and the outer forehead wall fabric layer cooperating to define a forehead wall pocket; and 
 a forehead wall padding layer positioned within the forehead wall pocket, the forehead wall padding layer being disconnected from each of the inner forehead wall fabric layer and the outer forehead wall fabric layer, the forehead wall padding layer comprising a rate dependent material. 
   
     
     
         15 . The garment of  claim 13 , further comprising:
 a first drawstring comprising first and second end portions; and   a second drawstring comprising third and fourth end portions.   
     
     
         16 . The garment of  claim 15 , wherein the first drawstring string is positioned proximate to a front-facing opening of the hood, wherein the front-facing opening is defined by an edge of the first multi-layered sidewall, an edge of the forehead wall, and an edge of the second multi-layered sidewall. 
     
     
         17 . The garment of  claim 16 , wherein the second drawstring string extends from a first side of the front-facing opening around a rear portion of the hood and to a second side of the front-facing opening. 
     
     
         18 . The garment of  claim 17 , wherein drawing the first and second end portions closes the front-facing opening of the hood and drawing the third and fourth end portions tightens the first and second multi-layered sidewalls against a head of a wearer. 
     
     
         19 . A garment, comprising:
 a pair of sleeves;   a body portion; and   a hood extending from the body portion, wherein the hood comprises a multi-layered sidewall, the multi-layered sidewall comprising:
 an inner fabric layer and an outer fabric layer, the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer cooperating to define a pocket; and 
 a padding layer positioned within the pocket, the padding layer being disconnected from each of the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer, the padding layer comprising a semi-rigid material. 
   
     
     
         20 . The garment of  claim 19 , wherein the garment is selected from the group consisting of a sweatshirt and a coat.
