Abstract

The invention provides methyl-2-deoxyriboside containing at most 5 wt % of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside, based on the combined weight of methyl-2-deoxyriboside and methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside.

What is claimed: 
     
         1 . A composition comprising methyl-2-deoxyriboside and containing less than 4 wt % of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside, based on the combined weight of methyl-2-deoxyriboside and methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside. 
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is less than 3 wt %. 
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is less than 2 wt %. 
     
     
         4 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is at most 1 wt %. 
     
     
         5 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is at most 0.5 wt %. 
     
     
         6 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is at most 0.15 wt %. 
     
     
         7 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is at most 0.1 wt %. 
     
     
         8 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is at most 0.07 wt %. 
     
     
         9 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is at most 0.05 wt %. 
     
     
         10 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the amount of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside is less than 100 ppm. 
     
     
         11 . The composition of  claim 1  free of a buffer. 
     
     
         12 . The composition of  claim 1  essentially free of phosphate. 
     
     
         13 . The composition of  claim 1  essentially free of metals other than alkali metals. 
     
     
         14 . The composition of  claim 1  essentially free of metals other than potassium and sodium. 
     
     
         15 . A composition comprising [(2R,3S)-3-acetoxy-5-methoxy-tetrahydrofuran-2-yl]methyl acetate made by acetylation of a methyl-2-deoxyriboside composition containing less than 4 wt % of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside, based on the combined weight of methyl-2-deoxyriboside and methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside.

A composition comprising (4S,5R)-5-(acetoxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran-2,4-diyl diacetate made by converting [(2R,3S)-3-acetoxy-5-methoxy-tetrahydrofuran-2-yl]methyl acetate, wherein the [(2R,3S)-3-acetoxy-5-methoxy-tetrahydrofuran-2-yl]methyl acetate is made by acetylation of a methyl-2-deoxyriboside composition containing less than 4 wt % of methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside, based on the combined weight of methyl-2-deoxyriboside and methyl-2-deoxyribopyranoside
