Abstract

Method for tracking virtual currency includes receiving a request to track virtual currency used in game play of a video game. A batch is created for the virtual currency that is to be tracked. The virtual currency in the batch is associated with a unique identifier for tracking. An expiration period is assigned for tracking the virtual currency in the created batch. A determination is made on whether the virtual currency in the batch being tracked is not involved in the transaction that is predefined to be potentially fraudulent, during a period leading up to the expiration period. The virtual currency in the created batch is un-tagged upon expiration of the expiration period assigned to the batch based on the determination.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method for tracking virtual currency, comprising:
 receiving a request to track virtual currency used in game play of a video game, in response to a transaction involving the virtual currency;   creating a batch of the virtual currency for tracking, the virtual currency in the batch tagged with a unique identifier to enable tracking;   assigning an expiration period for tracking the created batch of virtual currency; and   determining the virtual currency in the batch being tracked is not involved in the transaction that is predefined to be potentially fraudulent, during a period leading up to the expiration period;   un-tagging the virtual currency within the batch upon expiration of the expiration period assigned to the batch based on the determination,   wherein the method operations are performed by a processor.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein determining further includes monitoring usage of the virtual currency in the batch, within the video game for a period leading up to the expiration period assigned for the batch. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , further includes updating a fraud event database upon determining the virtual currency in the batch is involved in the transaction that is predefined to be potentially fraudulent. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the request is in response to a purchase transaction initiated by a user. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the request is received in response to detection of a potential fraud event. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , further includes defining a batch size of the virtual currency to track, wherein the batch size is a portion of the virtual currency involved in the transaction; 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the batch size is defined as a preselected proportion of the virtual currency involved in the transaction. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the batch size is dependent on a user involved in the transaction. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the batch size is defined as a random percentage of virtual currency involved in the transaction, wherein the random percentage varies with each transaction. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the random percentage is based on a user involved in the transaction. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the unique identifier is a batch identifier that is specific for the created batch. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the unique identifier is a virtual currency identifier that is specific for each virtual currency in the created batch. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the expiration period is defined in one of date format or period format. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein un-tagging further includes removing the virtual currency in the batch of from use in the video game. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein un-tagging further includes removing the unique identifier tagged to the virtual currency within the batch so as to enable recirculation of the virtual currency without any tags within the video game. 
     
     
         16 . A non-transitory processor-readable tangible medium storing processor-issuable instructions for tracking virtual currency in an online video game, the instructions configured to:
 receive a request to track virtual currency used in game play of the online video game, in response to a transaction involving the virtual currency;   create a batch of the virtual currency for tracking, the virtual currency in the batch tagged with a unique identifier to enable tracking;   assign an expiration period for tracking the created batch of virtual currency;   determine the virtual currency in the batch being tracked is not involved in the transaction that is pre-defined to be potentially fraudulent during a period leading up to the expiration period; and   un-tag the virtual currency within the batch upon expiration of the expiration period assigned to the batch, based on the determination.   
     
     
         17 . The medium of  claim 16 , wherein instructions to un-tag includes instructions to remove the unique identifier tagged to the virtual currency within the batch so as to enable recirculation of the virtual currency without any tags within the video game. 
     
     
         18 . The medium of  claim 16 , wherein instructions to un-tag includes instructions to remove the virtual currency in the batch from use in the video game. 
     
     
         19 . The medium of  claim 16 , wherein the request is received in response to one of a purchase transaction initiated by a user or in response to a potential fraud event detected within the video game. 
     
     
         20 . The medium of  claim 16 , wherein instructions to create the batch further includes instructions to define a batch size of the virtual currency to track, the batch size being a portion of the virtual currency involved in the transaction,
 wherein the batch size is defined as one of a preselected proportion of the virtual currency involved in the transaction, random percentage of virtual currency involved in transaction or is based on a user initiating the transaction.
